The Iver Johnson Arms Eagle XL has always been a standout in the long-slide 10mm world, and the EAGLEXL10DS takes things a step further with a double-stack magazine that bumps capacity up to 15+1. That's a meaningful upgrade for range sessions or field carry, giving you the raw power of 10mm Auto without burning through your supply in the first few strings.
The 6" stainless steel barrel is the heart of this build. Longer sight radius, better velocity extraction from the 10mm cartridge, and a look that means business. The matte black steel slide runs long and serrated front and rear, giving you a positive grip whether you're racking it one-handed or running drills. The slide stop and thumb safety combo keeps the controls traditional and familiar for anyone with 1911 time behind them.
The black steel frame is built around function. An integrated beavertail keeps your hand high and comfortable, reducing felt recoil from a cartridge that definitely lets you know it's there. The G10 grip panels add aggressive texture without being punishing, and they hold up to anything you'd put them through at the range or in the field. The beveled magwell makes reloads quicker and cleaner.
10mm in a long-slide platform like this is a natural fit for handgun hunters targeting hogs or deer-sized game, or for range enthusiasts who want to stretch what a semi-auto pistol can do. The EAGLEXL10DS is the double-stack version of the Eagle XL line, which is what gets you to that 15+1 capacity. Most Eagle XL variants run single-stack magazines at 8+1. If you want more rounds on tap without changing platforms, the DS is the one to look at.
It's actually a really solid setup for that purpose. The 6" barrel wrings more velocity out of the 10mm cartridge than a standard 5" gun, and the longer sight radius helps with precision shots at hunting distances. 10mm is a well-regarded cartridge for medium game like whitetail and wild hogs, and the added weight of a long-slide steel pistol helps tame recoil.
Like most all-steel pistols with tight tolerances, the Eagle XL can benefit from a break-in period of 100 rounds or so before everything settles in and runs its smoothest. This is pretty normal for steel-framed 1911-style pistols and isn't unique to this model. Running a quality 10mm factory load during break-in is a good idea.
The Eagle XL line is set up with a dovetail front sight and a fully adjustable rear sight, which is a great combination for a pistol in this class. The adjustable rear lets you dial in your point of impact for the specific ammunition you're running, which matters more with 10mm than it does with milder cartridges.
G10 is a fiberglass-based laminate that stays grippy even when wet, doesn't swell or crack from weather exposure, and holds its texture over thousands of rounds. On a full-size 10mm that you might run hard at the range or carry afield, that durability and consistent feel is a real practical advantage over wood grips.
Standard factory 10mm Auto loads from major manufacturers work well in this platform. The 10mm cartridge is produced by nearly every major ammo brand, from standard pressure loads to hotter hunting rounds from companies like Buffalo Bore and Underwood. As with any 1911-style platform, stick to quality brass-cased factory ammunition, especially during the break-in period.
