The Shield EZ earned its reputation by being the pistol just about anyone can run, and this Performance Center version keeps everything that made it popular while adding the kind of upgrades you'd normally pay a gunsmith for. Chambered in .380 ACP with an internal hammer-fired action, the slide racks with noticeably less effort than a typical striker gun, and the magazines have load-assist tabs so topping off eight rounds doesn't leave your thumbs sore. For newer pistol owners, folks with reduced hand strength, or anyone who just wants a gun that's pleasant to practice with, it's hard to beat.
The headline upgrade is the 3.8 inch stainless ported barrel in a bright silver finish, paired with lightening cuts in the Armornite-finished slide. Between the porting and the reduced slide mass, muzzle flip on an already soft-recoiling .380 becomes almost an afterthought, which means faster follow-up shots and less flinch to train out. The flat-face silver anodized aluminum trigger gets the Performance Center treatment too, with a crisp break and a tactile, audible reset that makes it easy to run quickly and accurately.
S&W fits this model with HI-VIZ Litewave H3 tritium/Litepipe sights front and rear. In daylight the fiber pipes glow bright, and after dark the tritium takes over, so you get a usable sight picture around the clock without needing an optic. A tactile loaded chamber indicator lets you see and feel chamber status, and the Picatinny-style rail up front takes a light or laser if that's part of your setup.
The pistol ships with two 8-round magazines for an 8+1 capacity, plus a Performance Center branded cleaning kit with a collapsible rod, brushes, jags, and patches. Grip and thumb safeties round out the control layout. At roughly 18.5 ounces it carries easily all day, and it shoots well enough that range trips stop feeling like homework.
Yes, that's the whole point of the EZ line. The internal hammer-fired design takes much less effort to cycle the slide than most striker-fired pistols, and the magazines have load-assist tabs on the sides so you can pull the follower down while dropping rounds in. It's a popular pick for people with arthritis, smaller hands, or limited grip strength.
The ports vent gas upward at the muzzle, which pushes the barrel down and cuts muzzle flip. Combined with the lightening cuts in the slide, the gun stays flatter between shots, so follow-up shots come quicker. Since .380 ACP is already a soft shooter, this version is about as gentle as a defensive pistol gets.
They do. The Litewave H3 sights combine fiber optic Litepipes that gather ambient light during the day with tritium inserts that glow on their own in low light. You get a bright, usable sight picture around the clock without batteries or an optic.
This model, part number 12718, has both a manual thumb safety and a Performance Center enhanced grip safety on the backstrap. The grip safety disengages naturally when you take a firing grip, and the thumb safety gives you an extra layer if you prefer one. S&W also makes a version without the thumb safety, so double-check the part number if that matters to you.
