The CZ A01-SD OR did not come from a product planning committee. It came from CZ Custom's shop in Mesa, Arizona, built from the ground up by people who actually compete. The foundation is a hammer-forged, CNC-machined blued steel frame rooted in the classic CZ 75 lineage, but taken considerably further. The shortened dust cover is a deliberate design choice: it shifts the balance point back toward the hand for faster, more natural target transitions compared to the heavier LD variant. At just over 51 ounces, the weight is not a bug, it is the point. More mass means less felt recoil, which means faster follow-up shots.
The trigger package here is the real story. CZ Custom pins both the hammer and sear directly into the frame rather than using the standard CZ 75 setup, which delivers a noticeably more consistent pull shot to shot. The trigger itself is lifted from the CZ 85 Combat, paired with a CZC competition hammer, short reset disconnector, and extended firing pin. Single-action pull weight runs 3 to 3.5 pounds, while double-action comes in at 8 to 8.5 pounds. The bull barrel is 4.93 inches of 416 stainless steel, match-grade, and fits the slide with virtually zero play. Groups tighten up noticeably because that barrel-to-slide fit is as tight as a custom pistol gets. Feeding has also been widely reported as reliable across hollow points, full metal jackets, and coated bullets without any issues.
The optic-ready slide comes with a fixed rear sight installed on a removable cover plate, so it runs fine as-is with irons. Two aluminum adapter plates are included, one for RMR footprint and one for DPP, so swapping in a red dot is straightforward without sending the pistol out for milling. The optics plate is also pinned through the extractor, not just screwed down, which keeps your zero solid under recoil. Ergonomic details like the deep beavertail, undercut trigger guard, internal magwell, and aggressive 25 LPI checkering front and backstrap give you a grip that does not shift under fast strings. The pistol ships with two 19-round P-09 compatible magazines, and there is solid aftermarket support for holsters, magazine pouches, and CZ-specific gear.
The SD stands for short dust cover and the LD stands for long dust cover. The LD's heavier front end pushes the balance point forward, which reduces muzzle rise aggressively during rapid fire. The SD shifts that balance point back toward the hand instead, making target transitions feel quicker and the overall handling more agile. Neither is objectively better; it comes down to shooting style and what division you are running.
The pistol ships with two aluminum adapter plates covering RMR and DPP footprints, so most popular mini red dots like the Trijicon RMR, SRO, Holosun HS507 series, and Leupold DeltaPoint Pro will mount right up. The optics plate is also pinned through the extractor in addition to being screwed down, which keeps the optic stable and helps maintain zero under sustained fire.
The A01-SD is built on the P-09/P-07/P-10 magazine platform and ships with two 19-round P-09 compatible magazines. Standard CZ 75 magazines do not drop in without modification, but CZ Custom does offer conversion grip options for those who already have a collection of CZ 75 mags.
The A01-SD OR is well suited for USPSA Carry Optics given its optic-ready slide and 19+1 capacity. For Production Division, you would run it without an optic using the included cover plate and fixed rear sight. Always verify the current USPSA approved production gun list and rulebook for division eligibility before competing, as lists are updated periodically.
The A01-SD takes things further than the Shadow 2 out of the box. The CZ Custom shop pins the hammer and sear directly into the frame for improved pull consistency, and installs a CZ 85 Combat trigger, competition hammer, short reset disconnector, and extended firing pin as standard equipment. The result is a single-action pull in the 3 to 3.5 pound range with a notably short reset, which is a meaningful step up from a stock Shadow 2 that typically requires additional tuning to reach the same level.
It is an excellent range pistol and a genuinely enjoyable gun to shoot for anyone who appreciates a well-built all-steel DA/SA handgun. The weight helps soak up recoil, the trigger is excellent, and reliability across a wide range of 9mm ammunition has been consistently strong. It is a purpose-built competition platform first, so it is not designed for everyday concealed carry, but for range work, action shooting, and serious training it is hard to beat.
