Description

There is something about a humpback Browning that just feels right, and the A5 Lightning leans into that heritage without being stuck in the past. This is the modern A5, built around Browning's short recoil-operated Kinematic Drive system, which uses the energy of the fired shell to cycle the action instead of bleeding gas into the receiver. That keeps the internals cleaner between range trips and lets the gun run a wide range of loads in ugly weather without complaint. Browning stands behind the action with a 100,000 round or five year guarantee, which tells you how much confidence they have in it.

What sets the Lightning apart from the standard A5 Hunter is the stock. The round-knob, semi-pistol grip is a throwback to the old Auto-5 and Citori Lightning, and plenty of upland hunters prefer it because the relaxed grip angle lets the gun come up fast and puts your trigger finger right where it needs to be on a flushing rooster. The gloss Turkish walnut with 18 lines-per-inch checkering looks the part too, set against a gloss black anodized receiver and a high-gloss blued 28 inch vent rib barrel. The whole stock is shim-adjustable for length of pull, cast, and drop, and quarter and half inch spacers come in the box so you can dial in the fit.

The 12 gauge, 3 inch chamber handles everything from light target loads to heavier hunting fare, and the barrel features Browning's back-bored Total Barrel Dynamics with a lengthened forcing cone for better patterns and a little less felt thump. The Inflex II recoil pad and that flat-shooting 50/50 point of impact make it comfortable on long days at the clays course. You also get the long sighting plane that made the original humpback famous, topped with a fiber-optic front sight and ivory mid-bead for quick target pickup.

In the box you get three flush Invector-DS choke tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder along with a choke wrench. Whether you chase pheasants, quail, and chukar or just like breaking clays with a good-looking autoloader, this one earns its spot in the safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the A5 Lightning gas operated or recoil operated?

It is recoil operated, using Browning's Kinematic Drive system. The action harnesses recoil energy to cycle the bolt, so powder gases stay out of the receiver and head out the barrel instead. That means a cleaner-running gun that needs less frequent scrubbing than most gas autoloaders, and it cycles reliably across a wide range of loads in rough weather.

What is the difference between the A5 Lightning and the A5 Hunter?

The big difference is the stock. The Lightning wears a classic round-knob, semi-pistol grip like the old Auto-5 and Citori Lightning, while the Hunter has a more vertical full pistol grip. A lot of upland hunters find the Lightning's relaxed grip angle quicker and more natural on fast-flushing birds, and it gives the gun a more traditional look overall.

What comes in the box with this shotgun?

You get the shotgun with its gloss Turkish walnut stock, three flush-fit Invector-DS choke tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, plus a choke wrench. Browning also includes quarter and half inch stock spacers along with shims so you can adjust length of pull, cast, and drop to fit you properly.

Can the A5 Lightning shoot steel shot for waterfowl?

Yes. The barrel is rated for steel shot, and the Invector-DS choke system is designed to handle modern steel loads. With the 3 inch chamber you can run heavier waterfowl loads, though most folks buy this configuration with upland birds and clays in mind.

Does this shotgun handle light target loads reliably?

The Kinematic Drive action is known for cycling a wide variety of loads, from lighter 2 3/4 inch target shells up to 3 inch hunting loads. Like most recoil-operated autoloaders, it appreciates a short break-in period, so run a few boxes of standard loads through it first. Browning backs the action with a 100,000 round or five year guarantee.

Is the stock adjustable for fit?

It is. The Lightning stock is shim-adjustable for length of pull, cast, and drop, and the included quarter and half inch spacers let you fine-tune things further. That makes it much easier to get a proper gun fit without a trip to a stock fitter, which pays off in more consistent mounts and better scores on birds and clays.
