There is something about a humpback Browning that just feels right, and the A5 Lightning leans into that heritage without being stuck in the past. This is the modern A5, built around Browning's short recoil-operated Kinematic Drive system, which uses the energy of the fired shell to cycle the action instead of bleeding gas into the receiver. That keeps the internals cleaner between range trips and lets the gun run a wide range of loads in ugly weather without complaint. What sets the Lightning apart from the standard A5 Hunter is the stock. The round-knob, semi-pistol grip is a throwback to the old Auto-5 and Citori Lightning, and plenty of upland hunters prefer it because the relaxed grip angle lets the gun come up fast and puts your trigger finger right where it needs to be on a flushing rooster. The gloss Turkish walnut with 18 lines-per-inch checkering looks the part too, set against a gloss black anodized receiver and a high-gloss blued 28 inch vent rib barrel. The whole stock is shim-adjustable for length of pull, cast, and drop, and quarter and half inch spacers come in the box so you can dial in the fit.
The 12 gauge, 3 inch chamber handles everything from light target loads to heavier hunting fare, and the barrel features Browning's back-bored Total Barrel Dynamics with a lengthened forcing cone for better patterns and a little less felt thump. The Inflex II recoil pad and that flat-shooting 50/50 point of impact make it comfortable on long days at the clays course. You also get the long sighting plane that made the original humpback famous, topped with a fiber-optic front sight and ivory mid-bead for quick target pickup.
