There are AKs, and then there are Arsenals. The SAM5 sits firmly in the second camp. Built by the Arsenal Co. of Bulgaria, this rifle starts life as a hot-die hammer forged receiver blank that gets more than five and a half hours of milling before assembly even begins. That forging process matters. Where most milled AKs are cut from bar stock, hammer forging under a 5-ton press squeezes out internal voids and produces a finer steel grain, which translates to a receiver built for decades of hard use. Every part on this rifle is new production, including the forged bolt and bolt carrier.
Chambering an AK in 5.56×45 NATO (.223 Rem compatible) gives you Kalashnikov reliability with ammo you can find on nearly any shelf in the country. Recoil is soft, follow-up shots come quick, and if you already feed an AR platform, your ammo supply pulls double duty. The 16.3 inch cold hammer forged barrel comes out of Arsenal's Bulgarian plant with a hard chrome lined bore and chamber, so it shrugs off high round counts and neglected cleaning days alike. Up front you get 14x1mm left-hand threads wearing an AK-351 muzzle brake, plus a bayonet lug and cleaning rod for that proper AK feel.
Inside, Arsenal installs the FIME Enhanced Fire Control Group, a longtime favorite among AK fans for its smooth, consistent pull that beats a standard surplus trigger by a wide margin. The black polymer furniture includes an intermediate-length trapdoor buttstock with a 13.4 inch length of pull, which fits American frames better than the stubby stocks on many imports. A side scope rail comes mounted, so adding an optic is simple when iron sights are not enough.
Milled 5.56 AKs from Arsenal do not sit around long, and the SAM5 has earned a reputation as one of the most collectible rifles in the category. It ships with a 30-round magazine, sling, oil bottle, and cleaning kit, ready for the range the day you pick it up.
