There are a lot of AK-pattern rifles out there, but few come out of the box as well sorted as this one. The Zastava ZPAPM70 is built in the same Serbian factory that has been turning out M70 rifles for decades, and it shows in the details. You get the thicker 1.5mm receiver and bulged front trunnion that made the M70 platform famous for taking abuse, paired with a 16.3 inch cold hammer forged, chrome-lined barrel that shrugs off high round counts and rough conditions. The bolt carrier group and fire control parts are properly heat treated and matched, which is a big part of why these rifles have earned such a strong reputation among AK folks.
This ZR7762XR configuration skips the traditional wood furniture in favor of gear you would probably add anyway. A Magpul Zhukov-S side folding stock adjusts for length of pull, folds for compact storage, and includes a QD sling point. The Magpul MOE grip has internal storage and a much more comfortable angle than a standard AK grip. Up front, the extended M-LOK handguard runs long over the barrel and gives you plenty of real estate for lights, hand stops, or whatever else you like to bolt on. Zastava also installs their quick-release side scope mount with an extra 45 degree rail section, so mounting a red dot or scope does not require any extra shopping.
A few practical notes worth knowing. The safety selector has a bolt hold-open notch, a handy touch for range work and showing clear. The muzzle is threaded 14×1 LH under the included sieve-style device, so swapping muzzle devices is straightforward, and the barrel wears a bayonet lug for those who appreciate the classic touches. Adjustable front and rear iron sights come standard, and one 30-round magazine ships in the box. At around 7.9 pounds it carries that familiar AK heft, which helps soak up the mild recoil of 7.62×39. It does. The ZPAPM70 runs standard AK-pattern 7.62×39 magazines, including surplus steel mags, Magpul AK PMAGs, and US Palm mags. One 30-round magazine comes in the box to get you started.
Most stamped AKs use a 1.0mm receiver, so the M70's 1.5mm stamping is noticeably beefier and more rigid. Combined with the bulged front trunnion, a carryover from the original military M70 design, it handles hard use better and holds up over very high round counts. It adds a little weight, but that heft also helps tame recoil.
Yes. The barrel is threaded in the standard AK 14×1 left-hand pattern under the factory-installed device, so swapping to a different brake, comp, or flash hider is easy. The huge aftermarket for 14×1 LH devices means you have plenty of options.
