There are plenty of 5.56 rifles out there, but very few of them are built like this. The Zastava PAP M90 comes out of the legendary Zastava Arms factory in Serbia, the same folks who have been turning out military pattern Kalashnikovs for decades. It runs on the proven M70 operating system, wrapped in a heavy duty 1.5mm receiver with a bulged front trunnion, the kind of construction usually reserved for RPK style guns. Translation: this thing is overbuilt in the best way, and it will soak up round counts most rifles never see.
The 18.25 inch barrel is cold hammer forged and chrome lined with a 1:7 twist, so it stabilizes heavier bullets well and cleans up quick after a long range day. The muzzle is threaded 14×1 LH under the slant brake if you want to swap devices later. Zastava also fitted a three position adjustable gas system, which lets you tune the rifle to different ammo and muzzle setups instead of forcing one gas setting to do everything. Add a bolt hold open notch on the safety selector and a side rail for AK pattern optic mounts, and you get a traditional rifle with some genuinely useful modern touches.
The wood on these rifles gets noticed at the range, plain and simple. The walnut stock set gives the M90 that warm, classic Kalashnikov character that polymer just cannot match, and the fit and finish coming out of Zastava has a well earned reputation. At around 8.5 pounds, it has enough heft to shoot flat and smooth, and 5.56 out of an AK platform is about as soft shooting as it gets.
A 30-round polymer magazine ships with the rifle, and the M90 will also run with a variety of 5.56 and .223 AK pattern magazines. Between the mild recoil, the tunable gas system, and ammo you can find on just about any shelf, this is an AK you will not hesitate to shoot often.
Yes. The M90 is chambered for 5.56x45mm NATO, which means it handles full pressure 5.56 loads as well as .223 Remington without issue. The 1:7 twist barrel also stabilizes heavier bullet weights nicely, so you have a wide range of ammo choices.
It ships with one 30-round Zastava polymer magazine and will run with a variety of 5.56 and .223 AK pattern magazines. Keep in mind that 5.56 AK mags are a different animal than 7.62×39 mags, so standard AK-47 magazines will not work. Factory Zastava polymer mags are a safe bet if you are stocking up.
Yes. The rifle includes a side rail on the receiver that accepts Yugo pattern AK optic mounts, so you can add a red dot or scope without giving up the adjustable iron sights. Just make sure the mount you pick is cut for Yugo rifles, since they sit slightly differently than standard AKM side mounts.
The three position gas block lets you tune how much gas cycles the action based on the ammo and muzzle device you are running. That means smoother cycling with hot 5.56 loads and reliable function with lighter ammo. It is a feature you rarely see on AK platform rifles at this level.
