Salt air and moisture are hard on shotguns, and that is exactly the problem the SXP Marine Defender was built to solve. Winchester plated the 18 inch barrel, magazine tube, chamber, and bore in matte hard chrome, so the parts most likely to rust on a boat, in a cabin, or tucked away in a closet get real protection instead of a thin coat of bluing. The two-tone look of the chrome barrel against the matte black alloy receiver is sharp, but the finish is doing a job first and looking good second.
This is the version a lot of people should be buying instead of defaulting to a 12 gauge. The 20 gauge chambering takes a noticeable edge off the recoil while still throwing a payload that ends arguments, and at around 6 pounds with a 38.5 inch overall length, it swings fast in tight hallways. The Inflex recoil pad soaks up more of what is left, and the 3 inch chamber gives you flexibility to run everything from light training loads to full power buckshot. Capacity is 5+1, so you have six on tap when it counts.
The SXP earned its reputation on speed. The inertia-assisted slide action uses recoil energy to start the forearm rearward for you, and the rotary bolt with four locking lugs gives it a strong, positive lockup. Follow-up shots come quick once you get a feel for it. Up front you get a traditional brass bead plus a removable TruGlo fiber optic sight, so you can run whichever picks up faster for your eyes. The receiver is drilled and tapped if you want to mount an optic down the road.
The synthetic stock and ribbed tactical forearm have textured grip surfaces that stay put with wet or sweaty hands, and the Invector-Plus choke system ships with a cylinder choke installed, which plays nicely with buckshot and slugs. Crossbolt safety, bottom feed, and simple pump gun controls round out a shotgun that is easy to learn, easy to live with, and built to be there working when you need it.
It is one of the better options out there for that purpose. The 20 gauge chambering cuts felt recoil noticeably compared to an 18 inch 12 gauge, and the Inflex recoil pad helps further. At about 6 pounds it is light enough to handle easily without being so light that recoil gets snappy with defensive loads.
The Marine version adds matte hard chrome plating to the barrel, magazine tube, chamber, bore, and slide arms. That plating dramatically improves corrosion resistance, which matters if the gun lives on a boat, near the coast, or anywhere humidity is a concern. The standard Defender uses a conventional black finish on those parts.
Yes. The barrel is threaded for Winchester's Invector-Plus choke system and ships with a cylinder choke installed, which is the right call for buckshot and slugs at defensive distances. You can swap in tighter Invector-Plus chokes if you want to stretch it out for other uses.
You can. The alloy receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory, so adding a rail or scope base is straightforward. Out of the box you get a brass bead plus a removable TruGlo fiber optic front sight, which is quick to pick up in low light and plenty for most defensive setups.
