The standard 590 Shockwave earned its following by packing 12 gauge power into a 26 inch package, and the SPX version is what happens when Mossberg decides to finish the job for you. Instead of buying a Shockwave and then spending months tracking down a heat shield, shell carrier, and rail, the SPX ships with all of it installed. You get a heavy-walled 14.375 inch barrel wearing a full heat shield with a spiked stand-off muzzle, a receiver-mounted side saddle with five removable polymer shell holders, and a top Picatinny rail that comes off when you don't need it.
The side saddle is the real workhorse here. The shell holders mount to either side of the receiver, so lefties and righties can both set it up the way they like, and having five extra rounds on the gun matters when your whole capacity is 5+1 in the tube. The removable rail opens the door for a red dot or laser, which is a smart upgrade on a bird's head grip firearm since the bead sight takes some practice to run well from a low hold. The Raptor grip itself is shaped to pull recoil straight back into your hand rather than snapping your wrist, and the strapped forend keeps your support hand where it belongs while you run the pump.
Strip away the SPX hardware and you still have the pump gun Mossberg has been refining for decades. Yes, the included top rail is made for exactly that. A red dot or laser is one of the most popular upgrades on these since the bead sight takes practice to use well from a bird's head grip. The rail is also removable if you prefer to keep things slick and just run the bead.
It will run 2.75 inch, 3 inch, and 1.75 inch mini shells through the same tube. For the most consistent feeding with minis, a lot of owners drop in an inexpensive mini shell adapter, which snaps into the loading port in seconds. Minis also bump your capacity up and take a lot of the bite out of recoil, which makes this thing genuinely fun at the range.
The bird's head shape directs recoil back into the palm rather than twisting your wrist the way a traditional vertical pistol grip can. It is still a lightweight 12 gauge, so full-power buckshot gets your attention, but it is very manageable with proper technique. Starting with lighter loads or mini shells is a good way to get comfortable before working up.
