Winchester's inertia-assisted slide action is one of the fastest pump designs out there, and it runs on dual steel action bars with a four-lug rotary bolt locking up tight in the barrel extension. The 3-inch chamber and hard chrome plated chamber and bore handle everything from light target loads to heavier hunting shells, and that chrome lining makes cleanup after a wet day in the field a lot less of a chore. Capacity is 4+1, the safety is a simple crossbolt button, and the trigger group drops out for easy maintenance.
The satin-finished Grade I walnut stock and forearm wear classic cut checkering, so this looks like a real bird gun rather than a plastic starter. It depends on the kid, but this gun does a lot to help. The Inflex recoil pad softens the hit, and pairing it with light 2-3/4 inch target or low-brass field loads keeps recoil very manageable. If your shooter is on the smaller side or recoil-sensitive, Winchester also builds this same model in 20 gauge.
The length of pull is 12 inches, about an inch and a half shorter than a standard adult stock. Plenty of smaller-framed adults shoot it comfortably, and it also works well as a compact truck or brush gun. Larger adults will likely find it a bit short for a proper mount.
