Winchester's Super X Pump runs on an inertia-assisted slide action, and it is genuinely quick. Rotary bolt lockup keeps things solid, and the hard chrome-plated chamber and bore shrug off wear and corrosion season after season. The 3 inch chamber handles everything from light target loads to heavier hunting shells, and the tube holds 5+1 with 2 3/4 inch shells.
The field barrel is back-bored to tighten up patterns and comes with three Invector-Plus choke tubes, Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, so you can dial in for doves, pheasants, or the skeet range. The black composite stock and forend are non-reflective and weatherproof, the receiver is lightweight aluminum alloy, and black chrome on the exterior metal holds up better than traditional bluing. An Inflex recoil pad steers felt recoil down and away from your cheek, which on a 20 gauge makes for a very pleasant day of shooting. Sling swivel studs come standard for the walk in.
For the money, it is tough to find a more useful do-it-all setup. One receiver, two barrels, and just about every shotgun chore covered.
It's a simple, tool-free job. Unscrew the magazine cap, slide the barrel off, seat the other one, and tighten the cap back down. Most owners can do the whole swap in under two minutes once they've done it a time or two.
No, the Invector-Plus chokes are for the 26 inch field barrel only. The 18 inch Defender barrel has a fixed cylinder bore, which is well suited to its intended close-range role. You get Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder tubes for the field barrel.
Yes, it has a 3 inch chamber, so it handles both 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch 20 gauge shells. Keep in mind the 5+1 capacity is rated with 2 3/4 inch loads, and you'll fit fewer of the longer magnums in the tube.
It's one of the better options out there. The 20 gauge kicks noticeably less than a 12, the gun runs around 6.5 pounds so it carries easily, and the Inflex recoil pad softens things further. Add the two-barrel versatility and it's a setup a new shotgun owner can grow into rather than out of.
