There is a reason the SX4 platform has earned a loyal following, and this Defender version takes everything good about it and trims it down to a handy 18.5-inch package. At the heart of it sits Winchester's Active Valve gas system, which self-adjusts to feed on everything from light target loads to stout 3-inch shells. That gas operation also takes real bite out of recoil, so a long practice session with a 12 gauge does not leave your shoulder complaining. At 6 pounds 14 ounces, it swings quick and stays easy to maneuver whether you are working a 3-gun stage or moving through tight cover.
A lot of short-barrel shotguns ship with a bare bead and call it a day. Not this one. The SX4 Defender comes wearing an LPA front sight paired with a ghost ring rear, a setup that gets you on target fast without slowing you down up close. If you would rather run a red dot, there is a Picatinny optics rail already on the receiver, so mounting glass takes minutes instead of a trip to the gunsmith. The oversized bolt handle and bolt release are welcome touches too, especially with gloves on or when things need to happen in a hurry.
The Flat Dark Earth Cerakote on the barrel and aluminum receiver is more than a good look. It adds serious corrosion resistance, and the chrome-plated chamber and bore make cleanup quick after a heavy day of shooting. The synthetic FDE stock carries textured grip panels that stay planted when your hands are wet or cold, and the Inflex recoil pad helps tame what the gas system does not. Where this gun really separates itself from most defensive shotguns is the included Invector-Plus choke system. With Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder tubes in the box, you can tighten patterns for turkey, open them up for close work, or dial in something in between. Capacity runs 4+1 with 2.75-inch shells, and a reversible crossbolt safety keeps it friendly for lefties. One shotgun, a whole lot of jobs covered.
Yes, that is one of the strengths of the Active Valve gas system. It self-adjusts to a wide range of loads, from light 2.75-inch target shells up to full-power 3-inch magnums. Like most gas guns, it may want a short break-in period before it runs the very lightest promo loads flawlessly, but once settled in it is known for eating just about anything.
It does. Winchester includes three Invector-Plus tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, plus a choke wrench. That is a big advantage over most defensive shotguns with fixed cylinder bores, since you can tighten or open your pattern depending on the job.
Yes. The receiver comes with a Picatinny optics rail installed, so most rail-mounted red dots bolt right on. The factory LPA front and ghost ring rear sights are solid on their own, but the rail makes adding an optic quick and painless.
