There are lever guns, and then there's the Model 94. John Browning's design has been putting venison in freezers since the 1890s, and this Short Rifle version chambered in 38-55 Win is about as close to the original recipe as you can get. The 38-55 was one of the cartridges the old 1894 launched with, and it still does great work on deer and black bear at woods ranges. It throws a heavy, wide bullet at moderate velocity, so recoil stays pleasant and it hits with authority where most whitetail shots happen. Cowboy action and cast bullet folks love this round too, and for good reason.
The 20 inch barrel keeps the overall length right at 38 inches, so it comes up quick, swings clean, and rides easy in a scabbard or behind the truck seat. At roughly 6.75 pounds empty, you can carry it all day without complaining. The full length tube holds 7 rounds, the steel loading gate feeds smoothly, and the articulated cartridge stop keeps rounds moving without chewing up case rims. Round locking bolt trunnions and radiused lever edges make the throw fast and easy on your fingers, and the bolt relief cut smooths out cocking.
Up top you get an adjustable semi buckhorn rear paired with a Marble Arms gold bead front, a sight picture that has settled countless deer over the last century. The receiver is drilled and tapped for scope mounts, and Winchester includes a knurled hammer spur extension so you can still work the hammer comfortably with glass mounted. The top tang safety stays out of sight and keeps the receiver looking right, while the rebounding hammer adds a modern layer of security.
The Grade I black walnut wears a satin finish with a straight grip, rifle style forearm, and shotgun style buttplate, all set against brushed polish blued steel. It's a handsome rifle that begs to be carried, not left in the safe. If you've been wanting a 94 in something a little different than the usual 30-30, this is the one to grab.
Yes. The receiver comes drilled and tapped for scope mounts, and Winchester includes a knurled hammer spur extension in the box. That extension lets you cock and decock the hammer comfortably even with an optic sitting over the receiver.
The 38-55 is a classic woods cartridge that pushes a heavy .377 caliber bullet at moderate velocity. It's well suited for deer and black bear at typical timber distances, and recoil is noticeably softer than a lot of modern big game rounds. It's also a favorite among cast bullet handloaders and cowboy action competitors.
This is where the 94 shines. With a 20 inch barrel, 38 inch overall length, and a weight around 6.75 pounds, it comes to the shoulder fast and carries easily all day. The straight grip stock and radiused lever edges make cycling quick follow up shots smooth and comfortable.
It does. Winchester uses a top tang safety on the current Model 94, which sits behind the hammer where your thumb naturally falls. It pairs with a rebounding hammer, and the tang location keeps the receiver's classic lines clean compared to a crossbolt setup.
