The .38-55 Winchester was one of the two original chamberings when the Model 1894 first hit the scene, so there's something fitting about seeing it in the nicest factory 94 build Winchester offers today. The Deluxe Sporting wears oil-finished Grade V/VI black walnut with crisp cut checkering, and the grain on these stocks tends to be a real standout. Up front, the receiver, lever, and forearm cap are all color case hardened, which plays beautifully against the semi-gloss blue of the 24 inch button rifled barrel. This is the kind of rifle people stop and ask about at the range.
Looks aside, this is still a working Model 94. The action uses round locking bolt trunnions for a smooth, fast lever throw, and the radiused lever edges keep cycling comfortable through a long afternoon of shooting. The full-length magazine tube holds 8 rounds, and the whole rifle comes in at 7 pounds 8 ounces with a 42.5 inch overall length, so it carries and points the way a 94 should. The .38-55 pushes a heavy, wide bullet at moderate velocity, which translates to mild recoil and a well-earned reputation on deer and black bear inside typical woods ranges. It is also a favorite among cast bullet fans and handloaders who appreciate a cartridge with well over a century of history behind it.
Winchester fits a semi-buckhorn rear sight paired with a Marble Arms gold bead up front, a combination that is fast in the timber and easy to pick up in low light. If you want glass, the receiver comes drilled and tapped for scope mounts, and the hammer is drilled and tapped for the included hammer spur extension so you can still work the hammer cleanly under an optic. The top tang safety keeps the receiver lines clean and falls right under your thumb.
Between the wood, the case colors, and the throwback chambering, this is a 94 built to be handed down. Just plan on shooting it plenty first.
Yes. The receiver comes drilled and tapped for scope mounts from the factory, and Winchester includes a hammer spur extension that threads into the drilled and tapped hammer. That extension lets you cock and decock the hammer comfortably with an optic sitting over the receiver.
The .38-55 is a classic woods cartridge that dates back to the 1880s and was one of the original chamberings for the 1894. It throws a heavy .377 caliber bullet at moderate velocity, which makes it a solid performer on deer and black bear at typical hunting distances. Recoil is mild for the power on tap, and it is a longtime favorite with cast bullet and handloading folks.
This is the top-shelf version of the 94, wearing Grade V/VI black walnut with an oil finish and cut checkering instead of the standard grade wood on base models. Grain figure varies from rifle to rifle, but these stocks consistently show far more character than a standard 94. The color case hardened receiver, lever, and forearm cap round out the upgraded look.
The full-length magazine tube under the 24 inch barrel holds 8 rounds of .38-55 Win, plus one in the chamber for 8+1 total. That is a nice bump over the shorter carbine-length 94s and suits the traditional rifle profile of the Sporting model.
