The Model 1854 is Smith & Wesson's answer to a question a lot of folks have been asking: why can't a lever gun have the features we expect from a modern rifle? This .357 Magnum version pairs a 19.25 inch stainless barrel with a forged 416 stainless steel receiver, and the muzzle comes threaded 5/8×24 with a thread protector installed, so adding a suppressor or muzzle device is a five minute job. It also chambers .38 Special, which turns it into a soft-shooting plinker when you're just burning through an afternoon at the range.
Out of the box you get an adjustable XS ghost ring rear sight paired with a gold bead front, a combo that's fast up close and plenty precise at pistol-caliber distances. If glass is more your speed, the Picatinny rail up top handles optics and accepts mounts that share the Marlin 1894 hole pattern. The synthetic forend carries M-LOK slots for a light or sling mount, and the black stock has textured grip panels that hold on when your hands are wet or gloved. The flat-faced trigger breaks clean, and the large loop lever cycles smoothly whether you're bare-handed or wearing winter gloves.
Capacity sits at 10+1 of .357 Magnum, and the removable magazine tube makes unloading simple, no need to cycle every round through the action. At 36 inches overall and around 7 pounds, it carries well in a truck, on a four-wheeler, or through thick timber where a longer rifle gets hung up. The 1:14 twist stainless barrel shrugs off weather, and the whole stainless and synthetic build means less babying after a rainy hunt.
This is a genuinely versatile rifle. It has enough thump for deer and hogs inside 100 yards, handles quick and short for home defense, and pairs beautifully with a .357 revolver for anyone who likes keeping one ammo box in the bag. Yes. Like most .357 Magnum lever guns, the Model 1854 will run .38 Special as well. It's a great way to practice cheaply and cut recoil for newer or smaller-framed users, though as with any tube-fed pistol caliber rifle, some loads may feed more smoothly than others, so test what your rifle likes.
