The Wiley X Apex is the rare pair of shades that pulls double duty without looking like a compromise. It runs a Triloid nylon frame with a gloss black finish and stainless steel temples, mated to Selenite polycarbonate lenses in that Captivate polarized blue mirror tint. Snap on the included side shields and you've got eyewear that meets the ANSI Z87.1+ high-mass, high-velocity impact standard, which is exactly what you want when brass is flying at the range or you're running a chainsaw on the weekend.
Captivate is Wiley X's contrast-boosting lens technology, and it earns its keep. The polarized blue mirror tint cuts glare off water and pavement while sharpening color separation, so details pop and your eyes aren't fighting flat, washed-out light all day. You also get full 100% UVA and UVB protection. The polycarbonate build is shatterproof, which is the whole point of trusting a lens between your eye and a stray piece of shot.
This is a medium-to-large frame with broad eye coverage, measuring in around a 56mm lens width, 17mm bridge, and 137mm temples on a 6-base curve. Folks with medium and larger faces tend to love the coverage, while smaller faces may find it roomy. Dual-injected rubber nose pads and temple tips keep them locked in place once you work up a sweat, and at roughly 36 grams they stay comfortable through a full day. Reviewers consistently call out the clarity and the secure, all-day comfort.
What makes the Apex worth a look is that it doesn't force you to choose. It's clean enough to wear driving or grabbing lunch, but it's built and rated for shooting, hunting, fishing, and job-site duty. If you've been carrying a separate pair of safety glasses and a pair of sunglasses, this is the kind of frame that lets you leave one at home.
Yes. With the included side shields snapped on, the Apex meets the ANSI Z87.1+ standard for high-mass and high-velocity impact, which is the rating you want for range and shooting use. The shatterproof Selenite polycarbonate lenses handle impacts far better than standard sunglasses.
Captivate is Wiley X's contrast-enhancing lens technology. The polarized coating knocks down glare off water and pavement, while the tint sharpens color separation so details stand out. You also get 100% UVA and UVB protection across the board.
The Apex runs a medium-to-large frame with broad eye coverage, so it fits medium and larger faces best. Smaller faces may find it a bit roomy. If you like a wrap style with plenty of coverage, this is a strong pick.
Absolutely. The side shields are removable, so you can run them as everyday sunglasses when you don't need the safety coverage. Keep in mind the ANSI Z87.1+ rating applies when the shields are installed, so snap them on for range and job-site use.
