Back around 1920, Ithaca built a stubby little double gun called the Auto & Burglar that became one of the most recognizable defensive guns of its era. The Taylor's & Company Howdah Vintage is a faithful nod to that classic, built by Davide Pedersoli in Italy and reworked as a true handgun with rifled barrels chambered for .45 Colt and 3 inch .410 shells. Two barrels, two big external hammers, and a whole lot of personality.
The Vintage version is the one for folks who want the full traditional experience. Where the standard Howdah uses internal hammers, this model wears exposed rebounding hammers you cock by thumb with the action closed, paired with double triggers. The front trigger drops the right barrel and the rear trigger fires the left, so you always know exactly which tube you're running. Sights are a brass bead up front with a flip-up rear, and manual extractors lift your empties clear when you break the action. The whole thing comes apart like a proper side by side shotgun, with the forend and barrels separating from the frame for easy cleaning.
Pedersoli didn't cut corners on looks. The 10.25 inch octagonal barrels wear a deep browned finish, the steel frame is color case hardened with those swirling blues and straw tones, and the checkered walnut stock rounds out a package that looks like it walked out of a different century. At roughly 16.75 inches overall and a little over four pounds, it has real presence in the hand without being unmanageable.
This is a gun people buy because nothing else scratches the same itch. It's a conversation piece at the range, a natural fit for anyone who collects classic doubles or Old West era reproductions, and a genuinely fun way to burn through .45 Colt and .410 shells on an afternoon. Big hammers, twin triggers, and a satisfying break-action clunk. They don't make many like this anymore, which is exactly the point.
Yes, that's the whole appeal. Both barrels are rifled and chambered to handle .45 Colt cartridges as well as .410 shells up to 3 inches, so you can mix and match depending on what you're doing. Plenty of owners load one of each so the front and rear triggers give them two different options on tap.
The Vintage model uses exposed external hammers that you cock manually with the action closed, along with browned octagonal barrels for a more period-correct look. The standard Howdah runs internal hammers that cock when you open the action and includes a tang safety. Functionally both fire the same ammo through double triggers, so it mostly comes down to which style speaks to you.
It's manufactured in Italy by Davide Pedersoli, a company with a long reputation for high-quality historical reproductions, and imported by Taylor's & Company. The design pays tribute to the Ithaca Auto & Burglar double gun from around 1920. Fit and finish reflect Pedersoli's usual standards, with real color case hardening and walnut furniture.
It breaks down just like a traditional side by side shotgun. Remove the forend, break the action open, and the barrels lift right off the frame. That gives you easy access to the bores and chambers, and reassembly is just as quick.
