Description

Few rifles turn heads at the range like a Yellowboy. The Taylors and Company 1866, built by Uberti in Italy, is a faithful reproduction of the rifle that followed the Henry and helped put Winchester on the map. Nelson King's patented loading gate solved the Henry's biggest headache, and the 1866 went on to earn its nickname from that unmistakable polished brass frame. This version keeps all of that character intact with a brass receiver, forend cap, and buttplate set against a deep blued 20 inch octagon barrel and case hardened steel parts.

Shooting the 1866 Uberti in 45 Colt

Chambered in 45 Colt with a 10+1 capacity tube magazine, this rifle is a natural fit for cowboy action matches, plinking sessions, and anyone who pairs their long gun with a single action revolver in the same cartridge. The 45 Colt out of a 20 inch barrel is soft on the shoulder and pleasant to run all afternoon, and the toggle link action cycles with that smooth, distinctive feel Uberti lever guns are known for. At around 7.6 pounds, there is enough heft to keep the muzzle steady without wearing you out.

Yellowboy Details Done Right

The dovetail buckhorn rear and blade front sights keep the sight picture period correct and plenty usable, and both can be drifted for windage. The straight grip walnut stock is shaped in the classic rifle pattern with a crescent brass buttplate, and Uberti's wood to metal fit on these has a well earned reputation. Overall length comes in just under 39 inches, so it balances nicely and swings quick despite the full octagon barrel up front.

Why the Taylors 1866 Still Earns Its Keep

Whether you are building a matched cowboy rig, adding a piece of Old West history to the safe, or just want a lever gun with real soul, this one delivers. It looks like it belongs in 1866 and shoots like it was built yesterday, which is exactly the point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Taylors 1866 called the Yellowboy?

The nickname comes from the rifle's bright brass frame, which stood out from the blued and case hardened guns of the era. The original Winchester 1866 was the successor to the Henry rifle and earned the Yellowboy name on the frontier. This Uberti reproduction keeps that signature brass receiver, forend cap, and buttplate.

Can I shoot 45 Colt cowboy loads and heavier ammo in this rifle?

Standard pressure 45 Colt loads, including light cowboy action ammo, are exactly what this rifle was built for. Because the 1866 uses a brass frame and the original toggle link action, you should stick to standard pressure ammunition and avoid the hot Ruger-only or +P style loads. Keep it fed with normal 45 Colt and it will run happily for years.

Are the sights on the 1866 Uberti adjustable?

It wears a period correct blade front and buckhorn rear, both mounted in dovetails. That means you can drift either sight for windage adjustments, and the buckhorn rear has an elevation ladder you can step up for longer shots. They are simple, rugged, and true to the original design.

How do you load the Taylors 1866 rifle?

Rounds load through the King's patent loading gate on the right side of the brass receiver, feeding into the tube magazine under the barrel. That gate was the big improvement over the Henry rifle and holds 10 rounds of 45 Colt, plus one in the chamber. It is the same loading style found on later Winchester lever guns.
