This is the classic toggle-link 1873 in .45 Long Colt, dressed up with a 20 inch octagon blued barrel, a color case hardened receiver, and a straight-grip walnut stock, but underneath the period looks is a short-stroke action with a lightened hammer and trigger pull. Work the lever on one of these next to a standard 1873 and the difference is obvious right away. The throw is shorter, the effort is lighter, and follow-up shots come fast.
The Comanchero package was put together with competition in mind, and it shows in the details. A buckskin lever wrap keeps your knuckles happy through long match days, an elk hide butt cover takes the bite out of the crescent buttplate, and the raised gold bead front sight paired with a buckhorn rear picks up steel targets quickly. The tube magazine holds 10 rounds of .45 Colt with one more in the chamber, so most stages can be run without a reload. The Comanchero package is done at Taylor's by their gunsmiths before the rifle ships, so the short-stroke links, lightened hammer and trigger pull, lever wrap, butt cover, and gold bead front sight all come on the rifle from the factory. There is nothing to install and no aftermarket action work needed to get it match ready.
It was built for exactly that. The short-stroke action cuts down lever travel for faster cycling, the tuned trigger breaks lighter than a stock 1873, and the 10+1 capacity in .45 Colt covers a typical stage without reloading. It is one of the few 1873 reproductions that arrives competition ready right out of the box.
Taylor's 1873 line is built by Uberti in Italy, widely regarded as the top maker of Winchester 1873 reproductions. Taylor's imports the rifles and their in-house gunsmiths perform the Comanchero action tuning before the rifle goes out the door.
Standard pressure .45 Colt loads are the way to go, and lead cowboy loads in the 200 to 255 grain range are what most people feed these rifles.
