Description

Some rifles are built for the gun safe, and some are built to get thrown in a float plane, a pack raft, or behind the seat of a truck. The 1892 Alaskan Takedown from Taylor's & Company falls squarely in the second camp. Made by Chiappa in Italy and distributed exclusively by Taylor's, it takes the time-tested Winchester 1892 action and dresses it for hard weather with a matte chrome finish over the steel and a soft-touch rubber overmold on the wood stock and forend. Winchester offered takedown 1892s over a century ago, so this is less a gimmick and more a return to a genuinely useful idea.

Why the Alaskan Takedown Earns Its Name

The takedown feature is the star here. The rifle splits into two compact halves in seconds without tools, which makes it a natural fit for bush pilots, packers, and anyone short on space. At 5.9 pounds with a 34 inch overall length assembled, it carries like a dream, and the oversized loop lever runs smoothly even with gloves on. The 16 inch half-octagonal barrel keeps things quick-pointing in thick cover while still squeezing serious velocity out of .44 Magnum loads. Capacity is 7+1, plenty for a woods gun.

Sights and Optics on the 1892 Alaskan

From the factory you get a Skinner-style peep rear sight paired with a fiber optic front, a fast and rugged combo that works great in low light under the timber. If you want glass, the barrel is drilled and tapped for scout-mount optics and Weaver 61 bases, so a long eye relief scope or red dot bolts on without drama. The action is tuned to run Hornady LeveRevolution ammo especially well, though it feeds standard .44 Mag just fine.

A Working Rifle for Real Country

Between the weather-shrugging chrome finish, the recoil-soaking rubber buttpad, and that pack-friendly takedown design, this is a rifle meant to be used, not babied. For hog hunts, deer in the thick stuff, or a trail companion in big bear country, the Alaskan checks the boxes that matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the takedown work on the 1892 Alaskan?

The rifle separates into two halves, barrel and magazine tube assembly plus the receiver and buttstock, without any tools. It's the same basic concept Winchester used on original takedown 1892s over a century ago. Reassembly takes seconds and the design holds zero well enough for a woods rifle at practical hunting distances.

Can I mount an optic on the Alaskan Takedown?

Yes. The barrel is drilled and tapped for scout-style forward mounts and Weaver 61 bases, so a long eye relief scope or a red dot is an easy add. Many owners run it with the factory Skinner peep rear and fiber optic front, which is a fast, tough setup on its own.

What ammo does the 1892 Alaskan Takedown run best?

The action is tuned specifically for Hornady LeveRevolution, but it cycles standard .44 Magnum loads reliably too. Out of the 16 inch barrel you'll pick up a healthy velocity bump over a revolver, which makes the .44 Mag a legitimate short-range hunting round for deer, hogs, and black bear.

Is the chrome finish worth it over the blued version?

If you're hunting in rain, snow, or coastal conditions, the matte chrome finish adds real corrosion resistance that blued steel can't match. Paired with the rubber-overmolded stock, this version shrugs off weather better than a traditional wood-and-blue lever gun. It's the configuration to pick if the rifle will live outdoors more than indoors.
