Smith & Wesson patented their first lever gun back in 1854, and this rifle is their modern tribute to that history. The Model 1854 in .44 Magnum runs a forged 416 stainless steel receiver mated to a 19.25 inch stainless barrel with 1:20 twist, 8-groove rifling, and it feeds from a 9-round tube magazine. It also shoots .44 Special, so you can practice with softer loads and save the full-power stuff for hunting season. The action borrows from S&W's large-frame revolver DNA, and it shows. The lever cycles smooth right out of the box, and the flat-faced trigger breaks clean.
This is where the 1854 separates itself from the old-school lever guns in the rack. The receiver wears a Picatinny top rail and accepts mounts that share the Marlin 1894 hole pattern, so scoping it or adding a red dot is simple. The muzzle is threaded 11/16-24 with an included thread protector, ready for a suppressor or muzzle device. M-LOK slots on the synthetic forend let you bolt on a light or hand stop without clamps or gunsmithing. If you would rather keep it simple, the XS ghost ring rear sight and gold bead front are fast and easy to pick up in low light.
The matte stainless finish and black synthetic furniture shrug off rain, snow, and sweaty summer range days better than blued steel and walnut ever will. Textured grip panels on the stock and forend keep your hands planted when things get wet, and at 6.8 pounds with a 36 inch overall length, it carries easy and swings quick in tight timber. The large loop lever works fine with gloves on, and the removable magazine tube lets you unload safely without cycling every round through the action. A crossbolt safety rounds out the package. Yes. The Model 1854 is chambered for .44 Magnum and will also run .44 Special. That makes it a great setup for cheap, soft-shooting range practice with Specials while keeping full-power Magnum loads on hand for hunting or defense.
It is. The 19.25 inch stainless barrel comes threaded 11/16-24 with a thread protector installed, so you can spin on a suppressor or muzzle device without any gunsmithing. Just check that your can is rated for .44 Magnum pressures.
The receiver comes with a Picatinny top rail, so most optics mount right up out of the box. The 1854 uses a removable magazine tube, similar to a Henry. Pull the tube, dump the rounds out the front, then cycle the lever once to clear the chamber. It is a safer, faster way to unload at the end of a hunt compared to running every cartridge through the action.
