Description

There is a reason the 1873 earned the nickname "the gun that won the West," and this Trapper version from Taylor's & Company packs all of that character into a handier package. The 18 inch tapered octagon barrel trims weight off the front end and makes the rifle noticeably quicker to swing between targets, which is exactly why so many cowboy action competitors gravitate toward this length. At 36.87 inches overall and roughly 7.4 pounds, it carries easy and points fast without giving up the classic 1873 profile.

What Taylor Tuned Means on This 1873 Trapper

The DE at the end of the model number is the part worth paying attention to. Before this rifle leaves Taylor's, the action gets hand polished internals, custom hammer and lever springs, and a custom magazine tube spring, all adding up to a lightened, buttery lever stroke and a hammer and trigger pull that stock rifles just cannot match. Buying an 1873 and shipping it off to a race gun smith is a well worn path in the cowboy action world. This one skips that step entirely, so you can run it hard right out of the box.

Built by Uberti, Finished the Traditional Way

The rifle itself comes out of the Uberti factory in Italy, which has been building faithful 1873 reproductions for decades. You get a color case hardened frame with all that swirling blue and straw coloring, a blued octagon barrel, and a checkered walnut pistol grip stock with matching checkered forend. Sights are a dovetailed blade up front and a buckhorn in the rear, both drift adjustable, just like the originals.

Feeding the Trapper: .357 Mag and .38 Special

The 10 round magazine tube meets SASS capacity requirements, and the toggle link action happily runs .38 Special alongside full power .357 Magnum. That means cheap, soft shooting practice ammo on match day and plenty of thump when you want it. Whether you are chasing faster stage times or just want a beautifully finished lever gun with a genuinely slick action, this Trapper delivers on both counts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Taylor Tuned upgrade include on the 1873 Trapper?

The Taylor Tuned package is essentially factory action work. It includes hand polished internals, custom hammer and lever springs, a custom magazine tube spring, and an overall lightened action. The result is a much smoother lever stroke and a lighter hammer and trigger feel than a standard 1873, which is why tuned rifles are so popular with cowboy action competitors.

Can the Taylor's 1873 Trapper shoot .38 Special?

Yes. This rifle is chambered in .357 Magnum and will also feed and fire .38 Special. Plenty of owners run .38s almost exclusively since they are cheaper, softer shooting, and standard fare in cowboy action matches, then load .357 Mag when they want more punch.

Is this rifle legal for SASS cowboy action competition?

It fits right into SASS main match use. The 1873 toggle link design is a period correct external hammer lever gun in a pistol caliber, and the 10 round magazine covers standard stage round counts. Add the tuned action and it is basically match ready as it comes.

Who makes the Taylor's 1873 Trapper?

The rifle is manufactured by Uberti in Italy, one of the most respected makers of Winchester 1873 reproductions, and imported by Taylor's & Company in Virginia. Taylor's adds the tuning work and backs the rifle, so you get proven Uberti build quality with the upgraded action already done.
