The Springfield Armory Echelon 4.5F is what happens when a manufacturer takes a hard look at every modern duty pistol on the market and builds something better from scratch. At its core is the Central Operating Group, a fully self-contained, serialized stainless steel chassis that houses all the fire control components. It can be swapped between grip modules in seconds, and because the COG is the serialized part, changing grip sizes doesn't mean buying a new gun.
The optics system is where the Echelon really separates itself from the pack. Springfield's Variable Interface System uses movable self-locking pins to accommodate over 30 different red dot footprints, all without adapter plates. The pins actually exert lateral pressure on the optic's mounting surface as the screws are torqued down, eliminating wobble and left-right movement. Most optics sit low enough to co-witness with the iron sights, which is exactly what you want.
Ergonomics get serious attention here too. The grip ships with three interchangeable backstraps (small, medium, large), each with an integrated armorer's tool built right in. Springfield's Adaptive Grip Texture is a pressure-activated design that feels comfortable during carry and gets tackier and more secure the harder you grip it. The trigger guard is oversized and undercut for a high, consistent grip, and the deep undercut behind the guard helps bring the hand closer to the bore axis for better recoil management during fast shooting. Controls are fully ambidextrous out of the box, including the slide stop and magazine release, with no reversal required.
The slide is billet machined with a Melonite finish and features four distinct engagement surfaces, including a forward trench cut for press checks and a flared rear for positive purchase. The barrel is hammer-forged steel with the same Melonite finish and a 1:10 twist rate. Iron sights are a tritium/luminescent front paired with a Tactical Rack U-Dot rear for fast acquisition in low light. The gun comes with one flush-fit 17-round magazine and one 20-round extended magazine, plus a double-zipper soft-sided case with a separate interior pouch for the extra mag.
Most optic-ready pistols are cut for one or two specific footprints and require adapter plates for anything else. The Echelon's Variable Interface System uses movable self-locking pins that physically adjust to accommodate over 30 different red dot footprints, all with a direct low mount and no plates needed. As you torque the mounting screws down, those pins press laterally against the optic's interior surface to lock it in place with virtually zero play.

The pistol ships with a medium module installed, and each module also accepts three different backstrap sizes that come included in the box. You get a 17-round flush-fit magazine and a 20-round extended magazine. The flush mag sits flush with the bottom of the grip for a clean look and standard full-size capacity. The extended 20-rounder adds a small protrusion at the base but gives you three extra rounds, and Springfield also includes a basepad to convert the 17-rounder to 20-round capacity if you prefer.
It's genuinely ambidextrous right out of the box. Both the slide stop and magazine release are mirrored on each side of the frame with no reversal required. The controls are smooth and accessible from either side, which makes the Echelon a strong option for left-handed users who are often stuck reversing magazine releases or working around right-hand-only setups.
The Echelon uses a flat-faced trigger that is fully pre-tensioned, meaning the striker is fully cocked before you pull the trigger rather than completing the cocking cycle during the pull. The result is a shorter, lighter pull with a crisp break and a quick tactile reset. Pull weight comes in around 3 lbs 11 oz, which is on the lighter end for a factory striker-fired trigger.
This specific Echelon (EC9459B-U) comes with a tritium and luminescent front sight paired with a Tactical Rack U-Dot rear. The front sight has a glowing tritium insert surrounded by a luminescent ring for fast acquisition in low light, and the rear U-Dot notch is designed to be used in conjunction with it for a quick, intuitive sight picture. The rear also has a ledge geometry that makes it easy to rack the slide one-handed on a belt or boot if needed.
