Description

The Springfield Armory Echelon 4.5F in Desert FDE Cerakote is Springfield's most ambitious handgun to date, and it shows. Built around a serialized stainless steel Central Operating Group (COG), the Echelon takes a chassis-based approach to pistol design that puts it in a different league from the typical polymer striker-fired guns on the market. The 4.5-inch hammer-forged barrel wears a Melonite nitriding finish for exceptional corrosion resistance and durability, while the billet-machined slide features four distinct engagement surfaces including deep front and rear cocking serrations, a rear slide flare for easier manipulation, and a forward trench cut that gives you a natural reference point for press checks. Developed in partnership with Croatian manufacturer HS Produkt, the Echelon won Guns and Ammo's Handgun of the Year and the NASGW-POMA Best New Handgun award in 2023 for good reason.

The Echelon's Variable Interface System Changes the Optics Game

The VIS is one of the more genuinely clever engineering solutions to come out of the handgun market in a long time. Instead of relying on adapter plates that raise your optic and complicate your sight picture, the Echelon's slide uses three sets of self-locking pins that reconfigure the mounting footprint for over 30 different red dots directly. Included pin sets cover the Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Shield RMSc footprints right out of the box. The optics sit deep in the cut, which means a cleaner co-witness with the factory iron sights and a more natural dot acquisition. If you want to run irons only, the cover plate drops right in without leaving the slide looking incomplete.

Modularity, Ergonomics, and the COG System

The heart of the Echelon is that self-contained COG chassis, which carries the serial number and houses the entire fire control group. It can be moved between grip modules in seconds without tools, which means you can swap frame sizes or colors without buying a new gun. Three interchangeable backstraps are included so you can fine-tune the fit right out of the box, and the grip texture is well-thought-out: aggressive enough to hold on during hard use, but not so rough that it tears up your skin during carry. Controls are fully ambidextrous from the factory, including both the slide stop and magazine release. No swapping parts, no aftermarket additions needed.

The U-Dot sight system pairs a tritium luminescent front sight with a tactical rack U-notch rear, giving you a fast and intuitive sight picture in any lighting. The flat-faced trigger breaks at roughly 4.5 to 5 pounds with a short, defined reset that makes follow-up shots easy to manage. Takedown is handled by a left-side lever and does not require pulling the trigger. This FDE variant ships with two 15-round magazines and includes a double-zipper soft case.
