Description

The 5.7x28mm cartridge spent decades locked inside FN's pricey Five-seveN, but the Ruger 57 changed all of that when it hit the market in late 2019. Same bottlenecked, high-velocity cartridge. Same flat-shooting, low-recoil personality. A grip that actually fits normal hands and a price point that doesn't require a second mortgage. It wasn't just a cheaper alternative — it was a genuinely well-built pistol in its own right.

The frame is glass-filled nylon, which keeps the 57 light at 24.5 oz. despite having an all-steel slide and barrel. The slide is through-hardened billet steel with lightening cuts, finished in black oxide, and drilled and tapped so you can mount a red dot with a separately available adapter plate. Out of the box you get a fiber optic front sight and a fully adjustable serrated rear, which is exactly what you want on a pistol with this kind of long-range potential. The 4.94" alloy steel barrel wears a black nitride finish for durability, and the 1:9" right-hand twist does good work with the wide variety of 5.7 loads on the market.

Ruger's Secure Action fire control system uses a protected internal hammer paired with a bladed safety trigger. The pull is smooth with a clean break and a positive reset — nothing fancy, just reliable. The 1911-style ambidextrous manual safety is extended and easy to reach, and the magazine release is reversible, so left-handed shooters aren't second-class citizens here. A loaded chamber inspection port lets you confirm status at a glance, and takedown requires no tools and no trigger pull.

The two included 20-round double-stack steel magazines are worth calling out specifically. They load straight down from the top like an AR mag, they drop free cleanly on release, and 20 rounds in a pistol that sits at just 1.2" wide is legitimately impressive. If you already own the Ruger-57 Carbine, these same magazines work in both platforms, which is a nice bonus. The Picatinny-style rail up front is a full five slots, giving you plenty of room to hang a light or laser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Ruger 57 compare to the FN Five-seveN?

Both fire the same 5.7x28mm cartridge and offer 20-round capacity, but the Ruger 57 comes in at a significantly lower price point. The Ruger also has a more conventional grip profile that most shooters find easier to wrap their hands around, and its slide comes drilled and tapped from the factory for optic mounting — something the original Five-seveN didn't offer. The 1911-style ambidextrous safety is also a familiar touch that appeals to a lot of American shooters.

Is the Ruger 57 optics ready out of the box?

The slide is drilled and tapped for optic mounting, but you'll need to pick up a separately available optic adapter plate (available at ShopRuger.com and aftermarket sources) to actually mount a red dot. It's a quick and straightforward addition, and given the flat-shooting nature of the 5.7x28mm cartridge, a mini red dot on this pistol makes a noticeable difference at distance.

What is the Ruger 57's trigger like?

The Ruger 57 uses Ruger's Secure Action system, which combines a protected internal hammer with a bladed safety trigger. The pull weight is around 4.5 to 5 pounds with a smooth stroke, a clean break, and a positive reset. It's a solid, reliable trigger straight from the factory, and there's a healthy aftermarket if you want to tune it further down the road.

What kind of shooting is the 5.7x28mm cartridge good for?

The 5.7x28mm is a high-velocity, low-recoil round that excels at range work, varmint and small game hunting, and home defense. It produces significantly less felt recoil than a 9mm, which makes it easy to shoot quickly and accurately. Ammo availability has improved considerably since the Ruger 57 launched, with options from Federal, FN, Fiocchi, and several specialty manufacturers.

Does the Ruger 57 share magazines with the Ruger-57 Carbine?

Yes, the Ruger 57 pistol uses the same 20-round double-stack steel magazines as the Ruger PC Carbine chambered in 5.7x28mm. This makes the two a natural pair if you're building out a pistol/carbine combination with a common magazine. The magazines load from the top in a manner similar to an AR-15, which most shooters find intuitive.

Is the Ruger 57 suitable for left-handed shooters?

It's one of the better options in this category for lefties. The manual safety is fully ambidextrous with an extended lever on both sides, and the magazine release is reversible so it can be set up for right- or left-hand use. The slide release is also robust and easy to reach from either side of the pistol.
