Rost Martin is a newer name in the firearms world, but the RM1C makes a strong first impression. Founded by a husband-and-wife team in Dallas, Texas, the company set out to build a feature-rich, American-made compact pistol at a price that doesn't require you to think twice. The result is a striker-fired 9mm that goes toe-to-toe with guns costing considerably more, and holds its own on the range and in real-world testing.
The slide is where you notice the attention to detail right away. It wears a nitrocarburized steel finish for solid corrosion resistance, comes cut for an RMR-footprint optic right out of the box (metal mounting plate included), and features aggressive front and rear serrations along with anti-glare serrations across the top to reduce eye strain when acquiring a sight picture. The iron sights are steel, not plastic, with a white dot front and a blacked-out serrated rear dovetailed into the slide. When you do want to run a red dot, the included RMR plate also opens the gun up to a wide range of Holosun, Swampfox, and Leupold footprints with additional plates available separately from Rost Martin.
The ergonomics are a genuine strong point. Rost Martin's Responsive Grip Texturing, or RGT, uses proprietary graduated laser stippling that responds to how hard you grip it, giving you a secure purchase without tearing up your hands during a long range session. Textured index points on both sides of the frame help with gun control and recoil management, and the oversized, undercut trigger guard combined with an extended beavertail keeps your grip high and natural. Three interchangeable backstraps let you dial in the fit for your hand size. A full three-slot Picatinny rail up front handles most popular weapon lights without issue.
The flat-face trigger runs around 5 pounds with a clean break and short reset. The RM1C uses Rost Martin's own branded steel magazines made by Mec-Gar. The CA-compliant version of this model ships with two 10-round magazines. The RM1C is also compatible with standard CZ P10 magazine bodies, though the base plate won't sit flush without a Rost Martin-specific plate. Extra factory RM mags are reasonably priced and available directly from Rost Martin.
The RM1C sits right in that same compact category as the Glock 19, with a 7.1-inch overall length and 5-inch height with the flush magazine. It's very slightly smaller overall, and reviewers have noted the grip is notably slimmer than the M&P Compact while maintaining the same capacity in standard configurations.
