There's a reason the .360 Buckhammer caught on so fast with deer hunters, and the Rossi R95 might be the most natural home for it. Remington built the cartridge specifically for straight-wall deer country, pushing 180 to 220 grain bullets with plenty of authority out to sensible whitetail distances, and it feeds like a dream through a tubular magazine. The R95 gives you 5+1 of it in a rifle that measures just 39 inches overall, which makes a real difference when you're threading through thick timber or swinging inside a box blind.
The R95 wears a genuine hardwood stock and forend with a blued black oxide finish over a steel receiver, so it looks the part and holds up to real field use. The 20-inch hammer-forged alloy steel barrel runs a 1:12 right-hand twist with six grooves, which stabilizes the full range of Buckhammer loads nicely. Loading is handled through a large side gate, ejection is out the right side, and a crossbolt safety rides in the receiver. The action cycles smoothly out of the box and only gets slicker with rounds through it.
Because this rifle loads and ejects from the side, the top of the receiver stays solid, and Rossi drilled and tapped it for Marlin-pattern scope bases. That means you can run a traditional scope, a red dot, or stick with the adjustable buckhorn rear and drift-adjustable front sights that come installed. Plenty of owners do all three depending on the season.
At just under 7 pounds, the R95 has enough heft to soak up recoil, and the Buckhammer is a gentle cartridge to begin with, so newer hunters and recoil-sensitive folks shoot it comfortably. It's a straightforward, rugged rifle that does exactly what a deer gun needs to do, and it does it with the kind of character only a lever action brings to the woods.
Yes. The receiver is drilled and tapped and accepts Marlin-pattern scope bases, and since the R95 loads and ejects from the side, the top of the receiver is solid and ideal for optics. Some folks add a cheek riser to get proper eye alignment with a taller scope, while low rings or a red dot keep things closer to the irons.
The .360 Buckhammer is a straight-wall cartridge Remington introduced in late 2023 with deer hunters in mind. It pushes 180 to 220 grain bullets with plenty of energy for whitetail and hogs at typical woods distances, and recoil is mild compared to most centerfire deer cartridges. It's a great match for a lever gun since the tubular magazine feeds it smoothly.
Very comfortably. At just under 7 pounds, the rifle has enough weight to tame what is already a soft-shooting cartridge, so it's a solid pick for newer hunters, smaller-framed folks, or anyone sensitive to recoil. Follow-up shots come back on target quickly.
The tubular magazine holds 5 rounds, plus one in the chamber for 6 total. Loading is done through a generously sized gate on the right side of the receiver, which makes topping off in the field quick even with cold fingers or gloves on.
