The Retay 724 Patrol isn't a field gun converted for duty use — it was designed from scratch for close-quarters work, home defense, and tactical competition. Built around a single-piece alloy receiver and Retay's patented Inertia Plus system, this 12 gauge semi-auto runs on the same core technology that has earned Retay a loyal following in the waterfowl and upland market, now packaged into an 18.5-inch tactical configuration. It chambers 2-3/4" and 3" shells, holds 5+1, and tips the scales at just 7 lbs. The barrel is deep-bore drilled from solid steel rather than hammer forged, which Retay says produces a straighter bore and more consistent patterns. The factory-lengthened forcing cone comes standard, reducing pellet deformation and softening the recoil impulse without any extra cost or gunsmithing.
The Inertia Plus system is the heart of this gun, and it's worth understanding what sets it apart from a standard inertia design. A traditional inertia bolt can get knocked out of battery from jarring or rough handling — something that can matter a lot in a defensive context. Retay addresses this with a "Rollover" internal torsion spring built into the bolt head that keeps the bolt locked in battery even under hard movement or impact. The result is a cleaner, quieter cycling action and a gun that's more forgiving under stress. The receiver comes drilled and tapped with a bowtie Picatinny rail that accepts RMR and RMSc footprint optics right out of the box. No adapter plates, no machining required. Pair that with the all-metal, plastic-free trigger guard and the oversized reversible safety, and you've got a gun that was clearly thought through for real-world use.
The aluminum M-LOK forend gives you real accessory mounting options — lights, foregrips, panels — without adding the bulk of a full quad-rail setup. Length of pull runs 12.5" to 14", which should suit a wide range of body types. Loading is helped along by an enlarged port and a modified lifter for faster reloads under pressure. Retay also includes their Easy Out Magazine Unloading system, which lets you clear the tube without cycling shells through the action — a small but genuinely useful feature for safe handling and storage. Five choke tubes are included (Cylinder, IC, Modified, IM, and Full), using the Crio Plus pattern, and the barrel is breaching-choke compatible if you want to go that direction.
The 724 Patrol uses the Crio Plus choke pattern, which is the same thread system found on Benelli shotguns. Retay includes five flush-mount chokes in the box — Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full. The barrel is also breaching-choke compatible if you need that option, though a breaching choke is not included.
Yes on both counts, with some important notes. For solid slugs, use only the Cylinder choke; rifled slugs can be run through the Cylinder or Improved Cylinder. Buckshot is fine through any of the included chokes. Do not shoot slugs through the Modified, Improved Modified, or Full chokes — that can cause serious damage to the barrel.
The receiver ships with a bowtie Picatinny rail drilled and tapped with #8-40 screws, and it's cut to accept RMR and RMSc footprint optics directly. This covers a wide range of popular micro red dots including Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and other optics sharing those mounting footprints. No optic or mounting hardware is included.
Standard inertia actions can get knocked out of battery from bumping or jarring the gun — meaning the bolt isn't fully locked when you go to fire. Retay's Inertia Plus uses a patented internal torsion spring inside the bolt head that actively forces the bolt to rotate into battery and stay there. In a home defense or tactical situation where you might be moving quickly through a home or vehicle, that extra reliability margin is worth having.
Retay does not publish a specific minimum load spec for the 724 Patrol the way they do for some hunting models, but as an inertia-operated shotgun it needs adequate recoil to cycle the action. Standard 2-3/4" and 3" defensive or sporting loads at typical velocities will run it fine. Very light reduced-recoil target loads may not generate enough energy to reliably cycle any inertia-driven semi-auto, so stick with standard-pressure loads for defensive use.
