Description

Building an AR that runs 7.62×39 reliably is tough. Doing it with a 5.5 inch barrel is a whole different challenge, and Maxim Defense pulled it off with the PDX. This thing came out of the SOCOM PDW solicitation and took home RECOIL's Best of SHOT honors in 2019, so the pedigree is real. At just 18.75 inches overall and right around 5.1 pounds, it delivers legitimate intermediate rifle cartridge energy in a package you can tuck into a bag or stage just about anywhere.

What Makes the PDX So Short

The secret is Maxim's patented SCW system, a 4 inch brace setup with an integrated bolt carrier group and interchangeable buffer weights. That design chops inches off the back end that a standard buffer tube would eat up, and the swappable weights let you tune the gun to your ammo. Up front, the HATEBRAKE muzzle booster sits tucked under the M-LOK handguard, where it cuts recoil, knocks down flash, and shoves gas and concussion forward instead of back at you. It also feeds pressure back into the system, which is a big part of why this short of a 7.62×39 gun cycles the way it does, even on steel-cased ammo.

Details That Show Maxim Didn't Cut Corners

The parts list reads like a custom build. You get an ALG Combat Trigger, a Radian Raptor-LT ambidextrous charging handle, ambi safety and mag release, 7075 aluminum receivers, and an HK-height top rail for a stiffer upper and better optic mounting. QD cups on the handguard and brace make sling setup easy, and the flared magwell speeds up reloads. The ARID Flat Dark Earth anodized finish looks sharp and wears well.

Feeding the Maxim PDX 7.62×39

The optic-ready flat top is begging for a red dot, and the 20 round magazine keeps the profile compact to match the gun. If you already stock 7.62×39 for other rifles, this is one of the most compact ways to put that ammo to work. For truck gun duty, home defense, or just a seriously fun range session, the PDX earns its keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Maxim Defense PDX run reliably in 7.62×39 with such a short barrel?

Yes, and that is one of the biggest reasons this gun gets so much attention. Short-barreled 7.62×39 ARs are notoriously hard to get right, but the PDX's HATEBRAKE muzzle booster feeds gas pressure back into the system to keep it cycling consistently. Owners report it running steel-cased ammo without a fuss, which is rare in this format.

Does the PDX come with sights or an optic?

No, the PDX ships optic ready with no sights installed. The HK-height top rail gives you a rigid, slightly elevated mounting platform that works great with a red dot. Most owners pair it with a compact dot sight to match the gun's small footprint.

What is the SCW brace system on the Maxim PDX?

The SCW is Maxim's patented ultra-short brace system that measures just 4 inches, which is how the whole gun stays at 18.75 inches overall. It uses an integrated bolt carrier group with interchangeable buffer weights, so you can tune the action to your ammo. It shares the same rugged housing as Maxim's CQB stock line.

Can I suppress the Maxim Defense PDX 7.62×39?

Yes, the 5.5 inch barrel is threaded, so you can remove the HATEBRAKE and mount a suppressor rated for 7.62×39. The HATEBRAKE already meters gas back into the system at roughly suppressor-like levels, so the gun is set up to transition to a can well. Just make sure your suppressor is rated for the cartridge and barrel length.
