There is a reason so many people remember a Crickett as their very first rifle. Keystone Sporting Arms built this little single-shot around one idea: teach the fundamentals the right way. The G2 action requires you to manually cock it before every shot, so a young shooter has to think through each step instead of just running the bolt and pulling the trigger. Combine that with a rebounding firing pin safety and a one-round capacity, and you have a platform that gives parents and instructors a lot of peace of mind at the range.
This KSA2161 version wears a Mossy Oak Pink Blaze synthetic stock that stands out on the rack and holds up to being dragged through a season of range trips and squirrel woods. The blued 16.125 inch barrel keeps overall length right around 30 inches, and at roughly 3 pounds the whole rifle is light enough for a kid to hold steady without wearing out. The 11.5 inch length of pull fits smaller builds properly, which matters more than most people realize when it comes to teaching good cheek weld and sight alignment.
Out of the box you get a fixed front sight paired with an adjustable rear peep, which is a great setup for teaching iron sight fundamentals. When your young marksman is ready for glass, the receiver comes drilled and tapped for Crickett scope mounts, so adding a small rimfire optic down the road is an easy weekend project. Keystone also includes the EZ Load feed ramp to help small fingers guide rounds into the chamber, plus swivel studs so you can add a sling for walks to the back forty.
Plenty of rifles get called beginner guns. This one earns it. The Crickett is built for kids roughly 5 to 12 years old, with an 11.5 inch length of pull that fits smaller frames. There is no hard age rule, though. It really comes down to the individual child's size, maturity, and the level of adult supervision at the range.

After loading a round and closing the bolt, the rifle will not fire until you pull the cocking knob at the rear of the bolt. This extra deliberate step is a big part of why the Crickett is so popular as a trainer, since the rifle stays uncocked until the shooter is on target and ready. It slows things down in the best way for teaching new marksmen.
It is chambered for .22 Long Rifle, which is inexpensive, easy to find, and has almost no recoil or muzzle blast. That makes long practice sessions comfortable for kids. Standard velocity and high velocity .22 LR loads both run fine through the single-shot action since there is no semi-auto cycling to worry about.
