The KelTec PMR-30 is not like anything else in the handgun world. It started with a simple idea: fit 30 rounds of .22 WMR into a flush-fit magazine in a full-size pistol frame. Sounds straightforward enough, but making it work required some genuinely clever engineering. The result is a pistol that tips the scales at just 13.6 ounces unloaded — lighter than most empty 9mm pistols — while still holding more rounds than almost any other handgun in its class.
The action uses a hybrid blowback/locked-breech system that automatically adjusts based on the pressure of the cartridge being fired. In plain terms, it handles the wide range of .22 WMR factory loads reliably without needing fluted chambers or other tricks. The frame is built from glass-reinforced polymer (Zytel) around a 7075 aluminum subframe, and the slide and barrel are 4140 steel. A urethane recoil buffer and captive coaxial recoil springs soak up what little recoil exists, keeping muzzle rise minimal. The trigger is single-action with an overtravel stop, coming in around 4-6 lbs. with a feel that punches well above the PMR-30's price point.
The sights are Hi-Viz fiber optics front and rear, which makes target acquisition genuinely fast in most lighting conditions. The slide comes pre-drilled for optic mounting plates if you want to run a red dot. Under the barrel you'll find a full Picatinny accessory rail, and the ambidextrous thumb safety is 1911-style in feel. Magazine release is heel-mounted, which is a design choice driven by the physical length of the .22 WMR cartridge — it keeps the magazine locked tight and accessible to both hands.
This is a great fit for trail carry, camping, small game and pest control, or just a high-volume range session where .22 Mag's relatively affordable ammo and near-zero recoil let you shoot for hours. The heel release is located at the bottom rear of the grip rather than on the side of the frame. KelTec chose this design because the physical length of the .22 WMR cartridge requires a deeper, longer grip, making a traditional side-button release awkward to reach. The heel release is ambidextrous by nature and provides positive magazine retention — the magazines are drop-free, so they still clear cleanly once the release is pressed.
It is an excellent choice for range plinking, high-volume target shooting, small game hunting, camping, and trail carry where keeping pack weight low matters. At under 14 ounces unloaded with a 30-round magazine, it is one of the lightest full-size pistols available at any capacity. The light recoil and easy-operating controls also make it a solid option for shooters who find heavier centerfire pistols difficult to manage.
KelTec recommends sticking with quality domestic .22 WMR ammunition for best results. Brands like CCI, Hornady, and Winchester are commonly cited as running well in the PMR-30. Loading the magazine to around 20 rounds for the first few range sessions is also a good practice during break-in, as the double-stack .22 WMR magazines can be a bit stiff until they are worked in.
