This is the civilian cousin of the HK417 platform that has earned its reputation in the hardest conditions on earth, and Heckler & Koch did not water anything down on the way to the commercial market. The heart of the rifle is HK's short-stroke gas piston system, which keeps hot carbon and gas out of the receiver entirely. That means a cleaner bolt carrier group, longer stretches between deep cleanings, and less wear on internals compared to a direct impingement gun running the same round count.
The 16.5 inch barrel is cold hammer forged from cannon-grade steel with a 1:11 twist, and it holds its accuracy over thousands of rounds instead of shooting loose. The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24, and here is where the adjustable gas regulator earns its keep: dial it for suppressed or unsuppressed fire and the rifle runs correctly either way, without beating itself up or short-stroking. The A4 generation also trims weight and slims the profile compared to earlier MR762 models, so it handles better than you would expect from a piston-driven 7.62.
