Chambered in .308 Win and 7.62×51 NATO, it takes the familiar AR ergonomics you already know and scales them up for a cartridge that reaches farther and hits harder than any 5.56. At 34 inches overall with a 16 inch barrel and a six-position collapsible stock, it stays handy enough for truck duty, hog control, or deer season without giving up the ballistic advantage that makes the .308 such a workhorse.
Smith & Wesson put the money where it counts. The 16 inch 4140 steel barrel wears an Armornite finish inside and out for corrosion resistance, and the 5R rifling with a 1:10 twist stabilizes everything from lightweight varmint loads up through 175 grain match bullets. The mid-length gas system smooths out the recoil impulse compared to carbine-length big bore ARs, which your shoulder will appreciate over a long range session. A threaded muzzle with an A2 flash hider, a chromed firing pin, and a gas block with a Picatinny-style rail round out the build.
One of the standout features on the M&P10 is the fully ambidextrous control setup. The safety selector, magazine release, and bolt release are all mirrored on both sides of the receiver, which is a genuine benefit for left-handed users and a nice bonus for anyone training to run the rifle from either shoulder. The flat-top upper is clean and optic ready, so there are no sights to remove before mounting your scope or red dot.
Out of the box you get a 20-round Magpul PMAG, and the rifle accepts common SR-25 pattern magazines, so spares are easy to find. Add a low-power variable optic and a sling and you have a do-most-things .308 that covers hunting, defense, and range days with one setup. For a big bore AR from a name-brand maker, this one is tough to argue with.
It ships without iron sights. The flat-top upper receiver has a Picatinny rail, and the gas block includes a rail section as well, so you can mount a scope, red dot, or add-on iron sights right out of the box. Most owners pair it with a low-power variable optic to take advantage of the .308's reach.
It comes with one 20-round Magpul PMAG and runs on the common SR-25/DPMS pattern of .308 AR magazines. That means spare mags are widely available and affordable. Just note that AR-15 magazines will not fit, since the AR-10 platform uses a larger magazine well.
