There is a reason the M&P15-22 has been one of the best-selling rimfire rifles in the country for years. Smith & Wesson built it from the ground up as a true AR-style 22, not a lookalike with oddball controls. The charging handle, bolt catch, magazine release, and two-position safety all work like they do on a centerfire AR, so trigger time on this rifle carries straight over to your bigger guns. At around five pounds with almost no recoil, it is also just about the most fun you can have burning through a brick of 22 LR.
The Sport model wears a 16.5 inch carbon steel barrel with a 1:15 twist, an Armornite finish, and a threaded muzzle capped with an A2-style flash hider. Up front you get a slim 10 inch M&P handguard with Magpul M-LOK slots, and S&W tosses in a 2 inch M-LOK rail panel so you can hang a light or sling mount without buying anything extra. Genuine Magpul MBUS folding sights come installed front and rear, and the flat top rail leaves plenty of room for a red dot or scope when you are ready. A 6-position CAR stock adjusts to fit everyone from a first-timer to a full-grown adult in a winter coat.

Yes, the 16.5 inch barrel comes with a threaded muzzle wearing an A2-style flash hider from the factory. Remove the flash hider and you can mount a rimfire suppressor or other muzzle device using the standard thread pitch common to 22 LR rifles.
Like most semi-auto rimfires with a blowback action, it runs most reliably on high-velocity 22 LR, typically 36 to 40 grain loads. Quality bulk ammo generally cycles fine, while subsonic and standard-velocity rounds may not always have enough energy to run the action consistently. A quick cleaning every few hundred rounds keeps it humming along.
It is one of the most popular choices out there for exactly that. The 22 LR chambering has almost no recoil or muzzle blast, and the 6-position stock adjusts down to fit smaller frames.
