There's a reason the Golden Boy is one of the most recognizable rifles Henry makes. That polished Brasslite receiver, brass buttplate, and barrel band set against a blued 20 inch octagon barrel and genuine American walnut just looks right, like something pulled straight out of the 1860s. This H004VL version chambers the speedy .17 HMR and swaps the standard lever for a large loop, which makes cycling the action easier with gloved hands and adds a little extra western flair while it's at it.
The .17 HMR is a genuinely fun cartridge to run through a lever gun. It shoots flat, hits hard on small game and varmints out well past 100 yards, and barely nudges your shoulder. The tubular magazine holds 11 rounds, the 1:9 twist barrel is matched to the cartridge, and at 6.75 pounds the rifle carries enough weight up front to settle nicely for offhand shots. Squirrels, prairie dogs, and steel plates are all fair game here.
Up top you get a fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight with a white diamond insert and a brass bead front, a setup that fits the rifle's traditional character. If your eyes prefer glass, the receiver is drilled and tapped so adding a scope is a simple job. The action itself is where Henry really shines. It cycles with that slick, buttery feel the brand built its reputation on, and side ejection plus a transfer bar style safety with no crossbolt to fuss with keeps everything clean and classic. Left-handed folks can run it comfortably too.
