This version, model H004V, chambers the .17 HMR, and that changes the whole personality of the rifle. Where the .22 LR Golden Boy is a plinker at heart, the .17 HMR turns it into a legitimate varmint rig that shoots flat well past 100 yards with almost no recoil.
The 20 inch octagon barrel carries a 1:9 twist to stabilize those speedy 17 grain bullets, and the tubular magazine holds 12 rounds so you're not constantly topping off between prairie dog towns. At 6.75 pounds, it has enough heft to settle down nicely for offhand shots, and the 38.5 inch overall length keeps it handy in a truck or on a walk through the back forty. Sights are a fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear with a diamond insert paired with a brass bead up front, a setup that suits the rifle's traditional character. If you'd rather stretch the .17 HMR to its full potential, the receiver comes drilled and tapped for Henry's scope mount.

The receiver is Henry's Brasslite finish, a polished brass-colored alloy rather than solid brass. It gives you that classic golden look and keeps overall weight reasonable. The buttplate on this model is genuine brass.
The .17 HMR sends a light 17 to 20 grain bullet out at much higher velocity than a .22 LR, so it shoots flatter and hits harder at distance. That makes it a great pick for prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and other varmints out past 100 yards. Ammo costs more than .22 LR, so it's less of a casual plinking round and more of a small game and pest control tool.
It loads through the tubular magazine under the barrel. You twist and pull the inner brass tube, drop rounds into the loading port, then slide the tube back in place. The magazine holds 12 rounds of .17 HMR, which gives you plenty between reloads.
