Description

The SP9A3S is Grand Power's answer to "what if the Stribog was even more compact?" The S stands for short, and it delivers on that promise with a 5.5" threaded barrel shaved down from the standard 8" found on the SP9A3. The result is a more maneuverable package that still brings everything that made the A3 an upgrade over the original A1 blowback design. At its core is a roller-delayed blowback system that uses a transfer roller to slow bolt movement on firing, softening the recoil impulse noticeably compared to straight blowback 9mm pistols. Reviewers and range-goers consistently note how flat and controllable this thing shoots, especially for something so compact.

The non-reciprocating charging handle is a big deal on the short model in particular. It stays fixed up front while the bolt cycles behind it, keeping your support hand out of the action and making the gun significantly easier and safer to run with optics or lights up front. The receiver is built from hard anodized aircraft-grade aluminum on top with a polymer lower, keeping weight down without sacrificing the structural integrity you want in a pistol this size. Fully ambidextrous controls, including the safety lever and mag release, mean it works just as well for left-handed users right out of the box.

The handguard runs M-LOK slots on both sides along with top and bottom Picatinny rails, giving you plenty of room to mount a light, red dot, foregrip, or whatever else makes sense for your setup. The 5.5" barrel is threaded 1/2×28 and ships with a thread protector installed, making it straightforward to add a suppressor or muzzle device without any additional fitting. Flip-up iron sights are included and fold down flat when not in use.

The PDW brace setup here combines Grand Power's factory two-position collapsible brace assembly with the Gear Head Works Tailhook. The Tailhook deploys with a button press and braces against your forearm using a rigid support arm, helping counterbalance muzzle weight and keeping the gun stable without requiring your arm to be strapped in. It's a well-thought-out combination that makes a short, front-heavy pistol like this much more manageable at speed.

This FDE configuration ships in Flat Dark Earth finish throughout. The package includes three 30-round curved proprietary magazines and a custom molded hard carrying case. It's a strong package for range days, home defense, or anyone looking for a capable PDW-style pistol that punches above its size.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Stribog SP9A3 and the SP9A3S?

The SP9A3S is essentially a shorter version of the SP9A3. The key difference is the barrel length: the standard SP9A3 has an 8" barrel while the SP9A3S trims that down to 5.5", shortening the handguard proportionally as well. Both share the same roller-delayed blowback system, non-reciprocating charging handle, and controls. The S model trades a little muzzle energy for a noticeably more compact overall package.

What kind of ammo does the Stribog SP9A3S run best with?

The roller-delayed mechanism was originally calibrated around 124-grain NATO-pressure loads. Current imports include a US-specific locker designed to improve reliability with standard American 115-grain range ammunition, so the gun should run well on common 9mm loads. For suppressed use or if you want the softest cycling, 124-grain ammo tends to give the system the most consistent timing.

How does the Gear Head Works Tailhook brace work on the SP9A3S?

The Tailhook is a folding support arm that deploys with a button press and hooks against your forearm to help stabilize the pistol. It's attached to Grand Power's two-position collapsible PDW brace assembly, which lets you adjust the overall length of pull. Unlike strap-style braces, the Tailhook doesn't require your arm to be secured into it to function, making it fast and simple to deploy one-handed.

Can I add an optic or suppressor to the SP9A3S?

Yes on both counts. The top Picatinny rail runs the full length of the receiver, giving you a solid mounting platform for a red dot or other compact optic. The barrel is threaded 1/2×28 and ships with a thread protector, so you can direct-thread a compatible suppressor or muzzle device without any adapters. The non-reciprocating charging handle also makes running a suppressor more comfortable since it doesn't move during firing.

Does the SP9A3S use standard magazines or proprietary ones?

The SP9A3S uses proprietary Grand Power curved 30-round magazines. It does not accept Glock-pattern magazines; that variant is the SP9A3G. The gun ships with three magazines included, and spare curved 30-round mags are available from Grand Power and several aftermarket sources.

Is the Stribog SP9A3S a good option for home defense or is it mainly a range gun?

It handles both roles well. The compact size, 30+1 capacity, roller-delayed operation, and ambidextrous controls make it a practical option for home defense, while the threaded barrel and accessory rails mean you can configure it with a light and suppressor if desired. The PDW Tailhook brace adds stability that helps with accurate shot placement under pressure. For range use, reviewers consistently note it's one of the more enjoyable compact 9mm pistols to run through a lot of rounds.
