There's something about a break action twelve gauge that never goes out of style, and the Escort Optima makes that classic layout available without the premium price tag that usually comes with it. This version wears a steel receiver in a white chrome finish with engraving, which adds a bit of heft right between your hands where you want it. That extra weight helps the gun swing smooth on crossing birds and soaks up recoil when you're running heavier loads through those 3 inch chambers.
The stock and fore-end are cut from select Turkish walnut that's been kiln dried and moisture stabilized, so it holds up to weather swings instead of shifting on you season after season. A rubber recoil pad takes the sting out of long days at the trap line. Up top, the 28 inch barrels are made from chromium, nickel, molybdenum steel with chrome plating inside and out to fight off rust and wear, and every barrel gets proof tested before it leaves the factory. A 7x7mm ventilated rib with a fiber optic front sight keeps your eye tracking straight and helps the barrels shed heat during high volume shooting.
The single selective trigger lets you pick which barrel fires first, handy when you want an open pattern for the flush and a tighter one for the follow up. The steel receiver models come fitted with ejectors, so spent hulls kick clear on their own and reloads happen fast when birds are moving. Escort also built in their Easy Adjust action system, which lets you tune how much effort it takes to break the gun open. Included choke tubes in Full, Improved Modified, and Cylinder cover most situations, and they're rated for steel shot, so waterfowl loads are on the table too.
At around 7.2 pounds with a 45 inch overall length, the Optima carries comfortably in the uplands and settles in nicely at the clays course. It's a lot of traditional double gun for the money, and it's built to be used, not babied.
This steel receiver version comes with an ejector system, so fired hulls are kicked clear when you break the action open. That makes reloads noticeably quicker on a dove field or at the skeet range compared to plucking shells out by hand. The aluminum receiver Optima models use extractors instead, so it's worth knowing which one you're looking at.
Yes. The included choke tubes are rated for steel shot, and the chrome lined barrels are built to handle it. With 3 inch chambers, this gun is a legitimate option for waterfowl loads, just stick with the appropriate choke constriction for steel as you would with any shotgun.
It lets you adjust how much force is needed to break the action open and eject spent shells. New over under guns often feel stiff out of the box, so being able to tune that feel is a nice touch, especially for younger or smaller framed shooters. It also speeds up reloading once you dial it in to your preference.
That's really the point of this gun. The 28 inch barrels and roughly 7.2 pound weight give it a smooth, steady swing for sporting clays and trap, while the 3 inch chambers and included choke selection handle upland birds and waterfowl. The single selective trigger lets you choose which barrel fires first, which is handy in the field.
