There's a reason old timers called the 16 gauge the gentleman's gauge. It throws payloads close to a 12 but carries and swings more like a 20, and the Stevens 555 takes full advantage of that. Savage built this receiver from aluminum alloy, scaled it down to fit the 16 gauge frame, and reinforced the breech face with a steel insert. The result is a true sixteen that tips the scale at about 6.2 pounds, not a 12 gauge frame with smaller holes drilled in it. When you're three hours into a pheasant walk, that difference is the whole ballgame.
The 28 inch chrome-lined carbon steel barrels wear a ventilated rib with a brass bead up front, giving you a clean, uncluttered sight picture that gets on flushing birds in a hurry. A single selective mechanical trigger lets you pick which barrel fires first, and because it's mechanical rather than inertia driven, the second barrel fires even if the first shell doesn't. The tang-mounted safety sits right under your thumb where it belongs on a double gun, and manual extractors lift your hulls for easy removal, which is handy if you like keeping your empties instead of chasing them through the grass.
The oiled Turkish walnut stock gives the 555 a warm, traditional look against the matte black receiver, with cut checkering on the grip and forend for a sure hold in wet weather. Five interchangeable flush choke tubes come in the box, running from cylinder all the way to full, so you can set it up tight for late season roosters or open it up for skeet and close-flushing quail. Between the light weight, the quick handling, and the versatility of the choke set, this is a double that pulls duty as an upland gun in the fall and a clays gun the rest of the year without asking much in return.
This base model 555 uses manual extractors, which lift the fired hulls out of the chambers so you can pluck them by hand. If you want automatic ejectors that kick the empties clear, that feature is found on the upgraded 555E model. Plenty of hunters prefer extractors anyway since they keep your hulls from ending up scattered in the field.
It runs about 6.2 pounds unloaded, which is impressively light for an over/under. That comes from the aluminum receiver that's scaled specifically to the 16 gauge rather than built on a 12 gauge frame. It makes for an easy-carrying gun on long walks, though as with any light shotgun, you'll notice a bit more recoil with heavy loads.
Five flush-fit interchangeable tubes come in the box: Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full. That spread covers just about everything from close-range skeet targets to tight patterns for late season birds. The barrels are also chrome-lined, which helps with cleaning and long-term durability.
It handles both jobs well. The light weight and quick-pointing 28 inch barrels make it a natural upland gun, and the full choke set lets you dial it in for trap, skeet, or sporting clays on the weekend. The single selective mechanical trigger also fires the second barrel reliably regardless of whether the first round goes off, which is a nice touch at this level.
