The .410 bore gets overlooked in the semi-auto world, and that's a shame, because a soft-shooting autoloader in this little chambering is one of the most enjoyable guns you can bring to the field. The Escort PS fills that gap without draining your wallet. It runs on Hatsan's SMART Valve Piston, a self-regulating gas system that cycles 2.75-inch and 3-inch shells without you having to swap anything or babysit the gun. Load light target shells and heavy magnum loads in the same magazine tube and it keeps chugging along.
The 28-inch barrel is chrome-plated steel with a ventilated anti-glare rib and brass bead up front, so it swings like a proper field gun rather than a compact novelty. Five choke tubes come in the box, Full through Cylinder, which lets you tighten up for squirrels and rabbits or open the pattern for close-flushing birds and clays. The aluminum alloy receiver keeps overall weight down to about 6.2 pounds, and it's cut with an 11mm groove if you want to add a small optic. Capacity is 4+1 with 2.75-inch shells, and the included migratory plug drops it to 2+1 for bird hunting.
Hatsan includes four stock shims to adjust drop and cast, plus a rubber butt pad, so you can tune the fit whether it's headed to a smaller-framed shooter or a tall hunter with long arms. The checkered synthetic stock and forend shrug off weather and rough handling, and sling studs come already mounted. The FAST Loading System is a nice touch too, letting you top off the magazine one-handed without breaking your position.
Recoil-sensitive folks, new hunters, and anyone who just enjoys the challenge of a .410 will get a lot of mileage out of this gun. It's light enough to carry all day, gentle enough to shoot all afternoon, and versatile enough to handle everything from pest control around the property to a lazy round of clays.
It does a better job than most budget .410 autoloaders thanks to the self-regulating SMART Valve Piston gas system, which is designed to run both 2.75-inch and 3-inch shells. That said, like any gas-operated .410, it tends to be happiest with mid to heavy loads, and a short break-in period helps. Keep the gas system clean and it settles in nicely.
Yes. The aluminum receiver has an 11mm dovetail groove machined into the top, which accepts 11mm rings for a small red dot or scope. Most folks stick with the brass bead and vent rib for wingshooting, but the groove is handy if you want to set it up for squirrels or turkey.
It's one of the better options out there for that role. The .410 is already a gentle round, and the gas-operated action soaks up even more of the push. Add the shim-adjustable stock and rubber butt pad, and you can fit the gun to smaller-framed folks without a gunsmith.
Five tubes ship in the box: Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder. The multi-choke system is rated for steel shot, so you're covered for waterfowl-legal loads. That full spread lets you set the gun up for anything from tight squirrel patterns to open clays work.
