Duck hunting has a way of punishing gear. Freezing spray, mud, layout blinds, boat rides in the dark. The Browning Maxus II Wicked Wing was built with all of that in mind. The receiver and barrel wear Burnt Bronze Cerakote, which shrugs off moisture far better than traditional bluing, and the composite stock is dipped in Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Habitat so the whole gun disappears against cattails and flooded timber. Rubber overmolded grip panels on the stock and forend give you real purchase with cold, wet hands, which matters more than any spec sheet number when a flock is circling.
Under the hood is Browning's Power Drive gas system, tuned to cycle everything from light field loads up to punishing 3.5 inch magnum goose loads without complaint. The Lightning Trigger is a genuine standout for an autoloader, breaking clean with a lock time around 5.2 milliseconds, so there is very little lag between your decision and the shot. Browning also softened the recoil equation with a thick Inflex II recoil pad and a SoftFlex cheek pad, and after a long morning of heavy steel loads you will appreciate both. Oversized bolt handle and bolt release controls are easy to work with gloves on, and the chrome plated chamber and bore add another layer of corrosion resistance where fouling and moisture do their worst.
The 28 inch back-bored barrel carries a flat rib with a fiber optic front sight and ivory mid bead, and it swings the way a 7 pound 2 ounce gas gun should: lively but steady on crossing birds. Three extended Invector-Plus Goose Band choke tubes come in the box in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, covering everything from decoying mallards to high passing honkers. Capacity is 4+1 with 2.75 inch shells, and the crossbolt safety sits right where your trigger finger expects it. If you want one gas gun to carry from early teal through late season geese, this is a strong place to land.
The Power Drive gas system was tuned specifically to run a wide spectrum of factory ammunition, from lighter field and target loads up to 3.5 inch magnums. Like most gas autoloaders, it benefits from a short break-in period and regular cleaning of the gas system, but it is known as one of the more reliable feeders in its class.
It is surprisingly manageable for a 7 pound gas gun. The Power Drive system bleeds off a good portion of the recoil impulse, and the thick Inflex II recoil pad plus the SoftFlex cheek pad soak up much of what remains. Heavy magnum goose loads will always have some push, but this setup is noticeably softer than an inertia gun of similar weight.
It uses the Invector-Plus choke system and ships with three extended Goose Band tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. The Invector-Plus pattern is widely supported, so aftermarket waterfowl chokes from Browning, Carlson's, Patternmaster and others are easy to find.
For a duck gun, yes. Burnt Bronze Cerakote is a baked-on ceramic coating that resists rust and scratching far better than traditional bluing, which matters when your gun spends mornings in rain, snow, and boat spray. Combined with the chrome plated chamber and bore and the nickel Teflon coated internals, this gun is built to handle wet hunts season after season.
