Waterfowl guns do not need to cost a fortune to get the job done, and the Escort PS is a good example of that. This 12 gauge autoloader from Hatsan wears Realtree Max-5 camo from buttpad to muzzle, runs on a gas-operated action with Escort's Smart Valve Piston, and feeds from a 4+1 capacity magazine with a plug included for migratory bird seasons. The 3 inch chamber and self-regulating gas system mean it will cycle just about anything you feed it, from light 7/8 oz clay loads for preseason practice up to 2 oz magnum duck and goose loads when it counts.
The 28 inch vent rib barrel is chrome plated inside and out and made from nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel, so it shrugs off the moisture that comes with marsh hunting. Up top you get a 7mm checkered anti-glare rib with a red fiber optic front sight that stands out well against gray skies and dark timber. The barrel is threaded for the included five choke tube set (Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder), and the tubes are rated for steel shot, which matters when you are loading up for ducks and geese.
At around 7 pounds with a 48 inch overall length, the PS carries comfortably on long walks to the blind without feeling whippy on crossing birds. The synthetic stock and forend have molded checkering for a solid grip with cold or wet hands, and a rubber recoil pad takes the sting out of heavier loads. Stock shims let you adjust drop and cast to get the gun pointing where you look, which is a nice touch at this level. The receiver is aircraft-grade aluminum alloy with an 11mm groove cut on top if you want to add an optic for turkey duty, and a simple cross-button safety sits right where your trigger finger expects it. For a hunter who wants a dependable gas gun in full camo without babying it, the PS makes a lot of sense.
The gas system with Smart Valve Piston is designed to self-regulate across a wide range of ammunition. It handles everything from 7/8 oz light loads up to 2 oz magnum shells in both 2 3/4 and 3 inch lengths. Like most gas guns, give it a proper cleaning after break-in and it should run light stuff reliably.
Yes, the five-choke set that comes with the Escort PS is rated for steel shot. That covers you for waterfowl hunting where non-toxic shot is required. As with any shotgun, stick to more open chokes like Modified or Improved Cylinder with larger steel pellets for the best patterns and to be easy on the tubes.
The receiver has an 11mm groove machined into the top, so you can mount a red dot using an 11mm dovetail base or an adapter that converts it to a Picatinny or Weaver footprint. Adapter plates are inexpensive and widely available, and they open up a much bigger selection of optics. For most wingshooting though, the fiber optic front sight and vent rib work great on their own.
That is exactly what this configuration was built for. The full Realtree Max-5 camo pattern was designed with waterfowlers in mind, the chrome-plated barrel resists the corrosion that comes with wet marsh conditions, and the included magazine plug drops capacity for migratory bird seasons.
