Description

The DNT Hydra LRF HS225R is one of the more versatile pieces of thermal gear you'll find at this level. It runs a 12μm, 256×192 uncooled sensor with a NETD rated at 25mK or better, paired to a sharp 1024×768 Micro-OLED display refreshing at 50Hz. DNT's Image Super Resolution algorithm processes that 256 image to look closer to a 384-class picture, which helps pull detail out of brush and treelines where it counts. Base magnification sits at 3x with digital zoom stepping up to 12x, and the 25mm F/1.0 germanium objective keeps the picture bright.

What Sets the Hydra HS225R Apart

The big draw here is the built-in laser rangefinder and ballistic calculator working together. The LRF reads distances from 5 out to 1,300 yards, and the onboard calculator turns that number into a real holdover so you're not guessing on a longer shot. It's worth noting the rangefinder is built to work in standalone scope and handheld modes rather than clip-on use, so plan your setup accordingly.

Running the HS225R Your Way

This one wears a lot of hats. Mount it as a standalone thermal riflescope, slide it in front of your LPVO or low-mag prism optic as a clip-on, or pop it off and use it as a handheld monocular for scanning. The long 2.5-inch (65mm) eye relief and forgiving eye box make it comfortable behind a rifle, even on harder-kicking calibers, and the whole unit is rated to handle recoil up to .50 BMG.

Built for Real Field Use

At right around 14.4 ounces, the Hydra HS225R is easy to carry all night. The IP67-rated housing shrugs off rain, snow, and dust, and it's protected against submersion. Power comes from swappable flat-top 18650 batteries, good for roughly 5.5 hours each with a USB-C port for external power when you need to stretch it. You also get onboard photo and video recording with audio, 32GB of built-in memory, WiFi through the DNT app, multiple color palettes, several reticle choices, and Picture-in-Picture mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Hydra HS225R be used as a clip-on in front of a day scope?

Yes. The HS225R works as a clip-on in front of an LPVO or a low-magnification prism optic. For the sharpest image, DNT recommends keeping your day optic in the lower half of its magnification range. It also functions as a standalone riflescope and a handheld monocular.

How far will the laser rangefinder on the HS225R read?

The built-in LRF measures distances from 5 yards out to 1,300 yards. It feeds that reading into the onboard ballistic calculator, which gives you a holdover solution for the measured range. Keep in mind the rangefinder is designed for standalone scope and handheld use rather than clip-on mode.

What batteries does the Hydra HS225R use and how long do they last?

It runs on non-proprietary flat-top 18650 rechargeable batteries, and two are included in the box along with a charger. Each battery delivers about 5.5 hours of runtime, so a spare keeps you going all night. There's also a USB-C port for running the unit off an external power bank.

Is the HS225R tough enough for hard-recoiling rifles?

It is. The housing is rated to handle recoil up to .50 BMG, which covers just about any hunting or sporting caliber you'd mount it on. The IP67 rating also means it holds up to rain, snow, and dust in the field.
