This is the platform that earned its reputation with special operations units, and Daniel Defense builds this pistol version with the same core components. The heart of it is a 10.3 inch cold hammer forged barrel in chrome moly vanadium steel, chrome lined, HP and MPI tested, with a 1:7 twist that stabilizes everything from light varmint loads to heavy 77 grain match ammo. Up front sits the RIS II quad rail in Flat Dark Earth, the same forend Daniel Defense provides to USSOCOM, locked to the upper with the patented 6-bolt Bolt-Up System so your optics and lasers hold zero no matter how hard you run it.
The details here are what separate a Daniel Defense from the sea of budget ARs. Both receivers are CNC machined from 7075-T6 aluminum with a Type III hard coat anodized finish, and the lower gets a flared magwell plus a rear QD swivel point. The carbine length gas system with a low profile 4140 steel gas block keeps cycling smooth and reliable, suppressed or unsuppressed, and the GRIP-N-RIP charging handle works from either side while venting gas up and away from your face when you are running a can. The bolt carrier group is M16 profile, MP tested, chrome lined, with a properly staked gas key. Out back, the SB Tactical SBA3 brace gives you five positions of adjustment and its own ambi QD point.
At roughly 28.6 inches overall, this thing moves through tight spaces the way a full size carbine never will, which makes it a natural fit for home defense, truck duty, or fast-paced range work. The flat top receiver ships without sights, so plan on adding a red dot or irons, and the quad rail gives you real estate for a light, laser, and sling mounts without fighting for space. No, it ships with a bare flat top and no sights installed. The upper receiver and RIS II quad rail give you a continuous run of Picatinny rail, so mounting a red dot, LPVO, or backup irons is quick and easy. Most owners pair it with a compact red dot to match the close quarters role this gun was built for.
Very much so. The barrel is threaded 1/2×28 behind the included Daniel Defense flash suppressor, and the carbine length gas system cycles reliably with or without a can. The GRIP-N-RIP charging handle also has anti-gas features that redirect blowback gas up and away from your face during suppressed fire.
It feeds from standard AR-15 pattern magazines, so PMAGs, USGI aluminum mags, and Lancers all run fine. Daniel Defense includes one 32-round magazine in the box, so you have a full capacity mag ready to go from day one.
Mechanically they are identical. This version wears the RIS II quad rail in Flat Dark Earth over black receivers, giving it the classic two-tone look you see on issued MK18 uppers. Barrel, gas system, brace, and internals are the same proven Daniel Defense components across both colorways.
