The Daniel Defense H9 has a backstory unlike anything else on the shelf. It traces its roots to the Hudson H9, a pistol that debuted at SHOT Show 2017 and turned heads with its radical low bore axis concept before Hudson Manufacturing folded in 2019. Daniel Defense acquired the design rights and didn't just dust it off. They went back to the drawing board, putting the redesigned pistol through over a million test rounds before releasing a fully remastered version, with a new barrel built to run a wide range of ammunition, a redesigned backstrap, upgraded recoil spring, and trigger refinements that resulted in a lighter pull and cleaner feel.
The standout feature here is the bore axis, which sits lower than virtually any other compact 9mm in its class. The recoil spring rides deep in the dust cover, which pushes the bore centerline closer to the hand. Less leverage means the muzzle has less mechanical advantage to climb on you, so the gun tracks back to target faster between shots. Pair that with the 1911-style straight-pull trigger geometry and you get a shooting experience that genuinely feels different from the typical polymer striker gun. The trigger itself uses a bottom-hinged blade safety and breaks cleanly with a short reset.
The frame is 7075 aluminum, anodized and fitted with textured G-10 grip panels that are fully removable and replaceable. The slide is 4340 alloy steel finished in DLC coating, CNC-machined with front and rear serrations. Sights are a fiber-optic front and U-notch rear, both set in carbon steel dovetail cuts that match the Sig Sauer P-series footprint, so aftermarket options are plentiful. The slide is optics-ready with a CNC-machined plate system, the magwell is slightly beveled for clean reloads, controls are fully ambidextrous, and there's a STANAG 4694 rail up front for lights and lasers. At 29.6 ounces empty with a 1-inch slide width, it carries well for a metal-frame pistol.
The original Hudson H9 debuted at SHOT Show 2017 and introduced the low bore axis / striker-fired concept, but Hudson Manufacturing went out of business in 2019. Daniel Defense later purchased the patent rights and essentially rebuilt the pistol from the ground up. By their own account, only one part carried over from the original design, and the current version was tested through over a million rounds before release.
At 1 inch wide at the slide and 29.6 ounces empty, it sits in the same size neighborhood as a Glock G19 but feels considerably slimmer in the hand. The aluminum frame keeps weight reasonable for a metal-frame pistol, and the lack of sharp edges or significant protrusions makes it comfortable to carry IWB or AIWB. Holster options exist from several major manufacturers.
The slide comes pre-cut and optics-ready, but you will need a dedicated mounting plate specific to your red dot's footprint. Daniel Defense includes a CNC-machined mounting plate with the pistol. Third-party plates from companies like C&H Precision are also available if you want options for a broader range of optics.
The H9 uses a bottom-hinged blade trigger, meaning the safety blade is hinged at the bottom rather than the center like a Glock-style trigger. You engage it by pressing the blade straight back, which is the same straight-pull geometry as a 1911. There is no external thumb safety on this model, but the trigger blade safety prevents discharge if the trigger isn't deliberately pressed.
The dovetail cuts on both the front and rear sights match the Sig Sauer P-series footprint, which means there's a wide selection of aftermarket options available. Night sights, suppressor-height sights, and various fiber optic upgrades from brands that support the Sig P-series pattern will typically fit the H9.
