The CZ 75 has been one of the most trusted pistol designs in the world since 1975, adopted by militaries, police forces, and competition shooters across the globe. The CZ Custom Shop 75 Shadow RDS OR (model 91706) takes that proven foundation and upgrades it specifically for today's red dot competition game, delivering a pistol that is legitimately close to match-ready straight out of the box.
The slide comes from the factory with CZ Custom's RDS plate cut, so mounting a red dot is a matter of selecting the right adapter plate for your optic of choice. The slide is also serrated for a positive grip during press checks and manipulations. Up top, you get a fiber optic front sight paired with an adjustable rear, giving you solid iron sight backup regardless of what optic you run. The 4.6-inch barrel sits inside a full-size steel frame finished in durable black polycoat, and the checkered aluminum grips give you a consistent, repeatable grip purchase every time you pick it up.
This is a double/single-action pistol, which is part of why the Shadow platform has such a devoted following in competition. The DA first shot gives you a deliberate, controlled pull, and once you're in single-action, the trigger is clean and predictable. That combination, paired with the mass of a steel-framed full-size gun, means felt recoil is genuinely mild and the gun settles back on target fast. That's not marketing talk; it's physics, and it's a big part of why you see Shadow-series pistols all over USPSA Carry Optics and Production divisions.
The thumb safety and 16+1 capacity round out the practical specs. Two magazines are included. This pistol ships ready for a red dot and serious range time, whether that means club matches, practice sessions, or just running a more refined DA/SA platform at the range.
No, the red dot optic is not included. The pistol comes with the slide already machined for CZ Custom's RDS plate system, but you will need to select and purchase a separate optic and the corresponding adapter plate for your specific optic footprint. Compatible footprints include popular options like the Trijicon RMR/SRO, Holosun 507/508, Vortex Viper/Venom, Leupold DPP, and others depending on the plate chosen.
It's one of the more popular platforms in that division, and for good reason. The full-size steel frame keeps the gun heavy enough to soak up recoil and help the dot track smoothly, and the DA/SA trigger is well-regarded among experienced competitors. Out of the box it gets you very close to match-ready, though most serious competitors will eventually look at extended base pads to maximize magazine capacity within division rules.
The biggest difference is the optic-ready slide. The RDS OR has CZ Custom's plate cut machined into the slide from the factory, making red dot installation straightforward without any aftermarket milling. It also carries the CZ Custom Shop designation, meaning it goes through additional fitting and finishing compared to a standard factory SP-01 Shadow. The aluminum grips are also a typical upgrade over the rubber or plastic found on base models.
The first shot from a loaded chamber fires in double action, meaning the trigger both cocks and releases the hammer in one pull. This gives you a longer, heavier pull on that first round. Every subsequent shot fires in single action, with a shorter travel and lighter pull weight since the slide has already cocked the hammer during the previous cycle. Many experienced pistol shooters strongly prefer this setup for the control and predictability it offers.
CZ Custom's RDS system supports a wide range of popular red dot footprints, including the Trijicon RMR and SRO, Holosun 507 and 508 series, Aimpoint Acro, Vortex Viper and Venom, C-More RTS2, Delta Point Pro, Burris FastFire 3, and Shield RMS, among others. Plates are sold separately and simply screw into the machined cut on the slide. It's a well-thought-out system that makes swapping optics down the road fairly painless.
This is really a competition and range pistol at heart. The full-size steel frame makes it a substantial gun to carry all day, and most people who own one use it primarily for matches and training. That said, if you're comfortable carrying a full-size steel pistol and already shoot a CZ 75-pattern gun, the ergonomics and capacity make it a capable option for those who want to use one gun for both competition and home defense.
