The 28 gauge has a loyal following for good reason. Light recoil, quick handling, and surprisingly effective patterns make it one of the most enjoyable bores to shoot, and the CZ Drake is one of the most approachable ways to get into it. Built on the same CNC-machined action CZ uses across its shotgun line, the Drake pairs a 28 inch barrel set with an 8mm flat vent rib and a brass bead up front, giving you a clean, uncluttered sight picture whether you're on the skeet field or walking a fence line for upland birds.
At roughly 5.7 pounds, this little double carries all day without wearing you out, and it swings with the lively feel that makes sub-gauge guns so addictive. The Turkish walnut stock wears laser-cut checkering and a traditional pistol grip, with a 14.5 inch length of pull that fits a wide range of builds. The gloss black chrome metalwork keeps the look classic and cleans up easy after a wet morning in the field. CZ deleted the mid-rib on the barrels too, which trims weight between the hands and helps the gun feel quicker to the target.
The single selectable trigger is mechanical, so your second barrel fires whether or not the first shell ignites, a real plus with light 28 gauge target loads. Barrel selection happens right on the manual tang safety, and extractors lift both hulls for easy removal by hand, which reloaders will appreciate since your empties never end up in the grass. The included set of five flush choke tubes, from Cylinder all the way to Full, covers everything from close skeet birds to late-season crossers.
For a first over/under, a dedicated clays gun, or a lightweight upland companion, the Drake in 28 gauge is a whole lot of shotgun in a trim, well-mannered package.
The Drake uses extractors rather than automatic ejectors. When you break the action, both hulls lift up so you can pull them out by hand. A lot of folks prefer this setup since your empties stay with the gun instead of flying into the brush, which is handy if you reload 28 gauge shells.
It does both jobs well. The five included choke tubes let you set it up open for skeet or tighter for longer shots, and the 28 inch barrels with the flat vent rib give a smooth, steady swing on crossing targets. Its light weight also makes it a pleasant carry gun for upland hunting.
It has a single selectable trigger, so one trigger fires both barrels and you choose which barrel fires first using the selector on the tang safety. The trigger is mechanical rather than recoil-set, meaning the second barrel will fire even if the first shell fails to go off. That's a nice feature when shooting very light sub-gauge loads.
The 28 gauge version comes in around 5.7 pounds, noticeably lighter than its 12 gauge sibling. Combined with the soft-shooting nature of the 28 bore, that makes it comfortable for long days in the field and a great fit for smaller-framed or newer shotgunners.
