There aren't many over/unders built specifically for smaller-framed clay shooters, and even fewer that come dressed for competition right out of the box. The Stevens 555 Sporting Compact fills that gap nicely. It takes the proven 555 platform, shortens the stock dimensions for a proper fit, and adds the features clays and trap regulars ask for: ported barrels, a raised ventilated rib with a mid-bead, a fiber optic front sight, and an adjustable comb so you can dial in your cheek weld instead of fighting the gun.
The receiver is lightweight aluminum alloy scaled to the 20 gauge frame, with a steel insert reinforcing the breech where it counts. That combination keeps the whole gun feeling lively between stations while still standing up to a full day of birds. The 26 inch barrels are chrome lined for easy cleanup and long wear, and the porting takes a real bite out of muzzle jump, which matters when you're trying to get on a second target fast. A single selective mechanical trigger, tang-mounted safety, and extractors round out a straightforward, no-fuss action.
The oiled Turkish walnut stock and forend give this gun a look well above its class, set off by the silver engraved receiver. The adjustable comb is the standout here. Younger shooters grow, and stock fit changes with them, so being able to raise or lower the cheek riser means this gun can stay properly fitted season after season. A recoil pad keeps the soft-shooting 20 gauge comfortable through long practice sessions.
Five extended choke tubes come standard: Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full. That covers everything from close incomers on the skeet field to long crossers on a sporting course, and the 3 inch chambers mean it can pull double duty in the dove field or on a preserve hunt without a second thought.
The compact stock dimensions are built for smaller-framed folks, including youth shooters, women, and anyone who finds a standard sporting stock too long. The adjustable comb is a big plus here since you can fine-tune the cheek height as a young shooter grows or as your fit preferences change.
It's about as gentle as an over/under gets in this class. The 20 gauge chambering, ported barrels, and factory recoil pad all work together to soften things up, and with light 7/8 oz target loads recoil is very manageable for extended clays sessions.
The Sporting model adds competition features the base 555 doesn't have: ported barrels, an adjustable comb, a raised vent rib with a mid-bead, and a fiber optic front sight. The Compact version then shortens the stock dimensions for a smaller-framed fit. The base 555 is more of a plain field gun with a fixed comb and bead sight.
It hunts just fine. The 3 inch chambers handle heavier field loads, and with five choke tubes ranging from Cylinder to Full you can set it up for doves, upland birds, or preserve hunts. At its light weight, it carries all day without wearing you out.
