The CZ Custom A01-SD didn't start as an existing gun that got tweaked and rebranded. It was built from scratch by the CZ Custom shop in Mesa, AZ, as a proper evolution of the beloved Shadow series. If you're familiar with CZ's competition lineage, you already know the pedigree. If you're not, here's the short version: this is a steel-framed, hand-fitted, match-grade 9mm that's engineered specifically for serious performance.
The frame is hammer-forged and CNC-machined, then blued, with a deep beavertail, undercut trigger guard, 25 LPI checkering, and an integrated magwell. Every one of those details adds up to a grip that plants itself naturally in your hand and stays there. The "SD" in the name stands for short dustcover, which keeps the balance point back toward your hand for faster target transitions compared to the heavier LD variant. It's still substantial enough to absorb recoil and keep muzzle rise in check, just with a more nimble feel during strings of fire.
The trigger setup on the A01-SD is where this gun really separates itself. The hammer and sear are both directly pinned into the frame rather than sitting in a removable sub-assembly, which tightens up consistency in a meaningful way. CZ Custom fitted it with their Ghost Competition hammer, short reset disconnector, extended firing pin, and the well-regarded CZ 85 Combat trigger. DA pull runs 8 to 8.5 lbs and the SA breaks at 3 to 3.5 lbs with a short reset. For a gun running the double-action first shot, that's a clean, predictable package you can train around quickly.
The 4.925-inch bull barrel is machined from 416 stainless steel, which is a premium choice for both corrosion resistance and dimensional stability under heat. Bull barrels don't use a traditional bushing, so the barrel-to-slide lockup is tighter and more consistent shot to shot. That translates directly to better groups, especially when you're pushing the gun hard in competition. The slide itself is CNC-machined from 4140 bar stock and features front and rear serrations, so getting a grip on the slide during manipulations is never an issue. Sights are a fiber-optic front paired with a CZ Custom low-mount fixed rear, a no-fuss setup that works well in match conditions.
The SD stands for short dustcover and the LD stands for long dustcover. The SD model keeps the balance point closer to your hand, which makes the gun feel more agile and supports quicker target transitions during fast-paced shooting. The LD's heavier front end does a bit more work suppressing muzzle rise, but the SD is generally preferred by competitors who prioritize speed and maneuverability.

The A01-SD is built around the higher-capacity P-09 magazine platform and ships with two 19-round P-09 magazines. This gives it a 19+1 total capacity and makes magazine sourcing straightforward since P-09 mags are widely available.
This standard A01-SD (MPN 96331) is set up for iron sights and does not come with an optic cut from the factory. CZ Custom does offer a separate optics-ready variant (MPN 96333) if you want to run a red dot. The iron sight version ships with a fiber optic front and CZ Custom's own low-mount fixed rear sight.
