The Colt CCU Government is not a dressed-up range gun. It was developed with guidance from US Special Forces trainers, including well-known instructors Ken Hackathorn and Daryl Holland, which shaped every ergonomic and mechanical decision made on this pistol. The result is a full-size Government-frame 1911 in 9mm that genuinely earns its Combat Unit name.
The frame and slide are stainless steel finished in a matte black DLC (Diamond-Like Coating), which is harder and more corrosion-resistant than standard bluing or even most Cerakote applications. It holds up to carry, sweat, and rough handling without looking beat up after a few months of use. The 5-inch National Match barrel is polished stainless and fitted to tighter tolerances than a standard production 1911, contributing directly to the accuracy this pistol is known for.
Ergonomics are where the CCU really shines. The 25 LPI checkering on the front strap and mainspring housing keeps the gun locked in your hand under recoil. The undercut trigger guard lets you ride the gun high for better control, and the upswept beavertail grip safety keeps your hand clear of the slide while maintaining a firm, natural grip. The scalloped gray G10 grips look sharp and provide real traction without being harsh on the hand. DLC stands for Diamond-Like Coating, a surface treatment applied over the stainless steel frame and slide that is extremely hard and highly resistant to corrosion and wear. It outperforms standard bluing and holds up better to daily carry than many spray-on finishes. The matte black appearance also cuts glare well in bright conditions.
The CCU Government is fitted with Novak front and rear night sights. Novak is one of the most respected sight manufacturers in the industry, and their low-profile design minimizes snagging while still giving you a clear, fast sight picture. The tritium-filled sights glow in low-light conditions without batteries.
It is a very capable competition pistol right out of the box. The 9mm chambering offers lighter recoil and more rounds than the traditional .45 ACP Government Model, and the National Match barrel, extended magwell, and single-action trigger all contribute to faster, more accurate shooting. The Series 80 adds an internal firing pin block safety that is released by the trigger during the firing cycle. Some 1911 purists prefer Series 70-style guns because the extra components can slightly affect trigger feel, but in a well-tuned pistol like the CCU, the difference is minimal and most shooters won't notice it in practical use. The added drop safety is a meaningful benefit for a carry or duty pistol.
